Hi I'm John

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a 40-something member of the Mormon church with two graduate degrees. I love to think and learn and have had a relatively wide exposure to many ways of thinking. I believe education should be a life-long process.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in an active Mormon family with an extensive Mormon heritage. This doesn't mean that I didn't have to decide for myself what to believe. My father was a professor and most of the young people I associated with were children of professors and university staff. Exposure to widely-varying lifestyles and ways of thinking were extensive. Even though I was exposed to a particular religion from my infancy, my parents were quite liberal in their approach to how we were taught. We were never forced or coerced into going to church or attending church functions. I had to come to grips with many apparent conflicts between my religious education and scientific exploration. We can (and should) spend a great deal of time learning about our universe from what men have studied (2 Timothy 3:12), but I believe God has provided a way to learn those things that are most important for all of humanity's welfare -- specifically the purpose of our lives, the power of love, and the reality of his existence. I truly believe that we should gain all the knowledge we can in this life from all positive sources (this is a basic tenet of our religion) but I have discovered that by pondering, praying and seeking God with TRUE sincerity (James 1: 5-6), he will make his presence known and guide our lives. I have done this. I know he lives. I have felt his influence and his love. I challenge all seekers of truth to do the same. I am grateful for all of the knowledge I have received from scientists and inspired men of God but mostly from what I have received directly from God. I know the Book of Mormon is a gift from God to help us learn. I know there are inspired prophets on the earth - leaders of this Church of Jesus Christ - that also guide us to truth. If I can help others to experience the knowledge I have received from a merciful God, this brings me great joy.

How I live my faith

Right now, one of my main responsibilities is to assist full-time missionaries in spreading the gospel of the restored Church of Jesus Christ. My association with them as they share the message of the gospel with others have been among the most rewarding experiences of my life.
