Hi I'm Russ

I'm a husband, a geology student, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to slack line (a sport that is like tight rope walking). It is something I started when I was just 14 but I love it! It isn't like there is anything much more fancy then that it is just one of those things that for what ever reason is just fun. I love to also hike and mountain bike. I am just a young adult trying to become a high school earth science teacher. Most importantly, I love my family!

Why I am a Mormon

For me the greatest questions I have are "why" questions. Why are we here? Why did God create this earth? Why are we given commandments? This church and its message answers these questions. When ever I ask others these questions, I just get back a vague answers, or answers that seem to contradict other answers. This church is bold and unyielding, it is unpersuaded by mans opinion or the common belief or practices of others. I feel peace. there are simply answers that will always be there and wont change. I am a Mormon because I fell God's spirit. I have read, studied, and prayed to ask God, and I know through the spirit that it is true.

How I live my faith

I practice what the savior taught. I try to give love and kindness to those that I meet. If there is a need I try to do my best to help out. I also go to church every sunday. I read the scriptures on a regular basis. I pray. I don't smoke, I don't drink coffee or tea or alcohol. I just try to surround my self with good influences like family and recreation. I love my family! I have the best wife I could ever ask for and so one way I live my faith is that I try to be the best husband she could ever ask for because I know that is what the Lord asks me to be.

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

In answerer to this question, you will often hear or read the phrase "the things that go on in the temples are sacred" there is a difference between something that is sacred and something that is secret. they are things that need to be understood by the spirit. The lord teaches us a little bit at a time. The things that happen in the temple are precious to our faith. for my self being in the temple is when i feel the closest to God. It is something that we want all to have and recieve, but to first prepair and learn so that they can be ready to recieve the blessings of the temple for them selfs. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

A health code that has been given to us through revelation from a prophet of God. It gives us things not to do particularly not to drink coffee, tea, or alcohol. as well as not using or consuming tobacco, or illegal drugs. But it is so much more then just simply what "not to do". it also carries a list of commandments of what to do. Eating grains, vegetables, fruits etc. we believe that our bodies are precious sacred gifts from God, and so they are to be treated as such. Show more Show less

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

We have Apostles for that same reason Christ called them is his time. they are part of the orginization of HIS church. we read in Ephesians 4:11-14 "11And he Christ gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" Christ when he was here he organized a Church. He appointed leaders. There are so many different opinions today. so many different ideas about what is really right or what is wrong. it is sound wisdom to me that god would not just leave us to our own devices to figure this out for out self's. but i know that he would do all that he could to tell us what was right. For that reason he would establish his church. and if it was his church it would be organized the same way it was when he established it so that we too can become perfected and be edified by the teachings of his Chosen servants. Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

We believe in the Bible because it contains inspired words from God's prophets. we believe in the Book of Mormon for the same reason. and i would dare say we will always believe any Book that was inspired and written by God's servants. it doesn't matter the book title, it matters who wrote the book, and if it was inspired of God and they were commanded by God to do so. Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

The point of sharing the gospel is not to make a prophet. it is not to elevate one's self above another. it is not the purpose of the gospel to be used to get praise or glory of the world. it is meant to serve others and to help bring about the purpose's of God here on the earth. And it is simply the way of our Savior Jesus Christ. He never did anything and demanded some type of material item in return for his service. He did all that He did out of love for all man kind. What do Mormons believe about the Holy Ghost? Who is the Holy Ghost?

We believe that the Holy Ghost is a distinct member of the God head that is a personage of spirit. meaning that he looks like a person but he is a spirit. He is separate from our Father in Heaven and His Son, Jesus Christ. He testifies to our hearts what is true and what is from God. you don't have to be a Mormon to feel his influence. When ever we feel a sense of truth or we feel like we are taught an eternal truth, that is the power of the Holy Ghost. Show more Show less

Who is the Mormon prophet today?

Is it true that Jesus appeared in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection according to the Book of Mormon?

To be short and concise, yes! but don't take my word for it, read it for your self. it can be found in the Book of Mormon Starting in 3 Nephi 9. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

The missionarie's purpose is to simply "invite others to come unto Christ". They talk about Jesus Christ and extend invitations for people to do things to come closer to Him. for example invitations to read scriptures, to pray, to give up habits that keep us away from God. However they are as i said invitations, it is all up to the person they meet with if they want to act on those invitations or not. Show more Show less

Who chooses the Mormon prophet?

The Lord through the quorum of the 12 apostles. there is no election process. there is no credential's presented. No required church service. The twelve, at the death of the current prophet, gather and they receive revelation on who the Lord has chosen to be His prophet.  if there is still some confusion, it can better understood how the Prophet is chosen when you understand that we believe the following 5We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. 6We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. 7We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth. Can husband and wife be together forever? Do you believe that families will live together in heaven?

Matthew 16 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.s 19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Simply Yes and yes. When done with the priesthood authority, and when done in God's Temple. If a marriage or family is bond on earth or a family is bond on earth by the priesthood. then that marriage, or that family will be bond and sealed in heaven. Show more Show less

What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

it goes to the building of Chapels, temples, and the general funds for the church. what is more testimony building to me is to know where it doesn't go. It doesn't go to pay anyone. It is not for the purpose of getting gain for anyone person. your contribution to the Lords church will only go to the Lords church. the funds are heavily monitored. and every year an audit is done to make sure funds went to projects it needed to go to, and that every bit of money was used ethically and in accordance with the will of the Lord. Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

yes we do. His name is Thomas S. Monson. We believe that God is the same today and forever. It is obvious that we live in the world that needs God now more then ever. I look at the role of a prophet back in the time of the old testament and i see someone who not only testified of God or taught about God. But i see someone who received direction for how to get through the trails of the day. The prophet does the same for us in our time. From him we can learn what the Lord wants us to do now for our situation. In Moses's time there wasn't "divorce statistics" there wasn't Television, computers, High school, collage, heat bills and car payments. we have our own set of worries and so we still need that divine council that comes from the Lords servent. Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

To understand the answer to this question there are a few basic beliefs that we belief that would maybe help you understand why we do Baptisms for the dead. 4We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ second, Repentance third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost." -Articles of Faith "5And now, if the Lamb of God, he being holy, should have need to be baptized by water, to fulfill all righteousness, O then, how much more need have we, being unholy, to be baptized, yea, even by water! ... 9And again, it showeth unto the children of men the straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the agate, by which they should enter, he having set the example before them. -2 Nephi 315-11 in the Book of Mormon these scriptures show our belief in the absolute necessity of faith in Jesus Christ and His atonement, repentance, baptism, and recieving the Gift of the Holy Ghost to receive salvation. i know that God loves all His children and will give all of them their chance. by being baptized in their place, it aids in giving them that chance. there are those that never had the chance to be accept the Gospel of Christ here, but by being baptized in their place, we know that they are given that chance. No. we stand up for values. but there is no endorsing or encouragement to vote against/for any one political PERSON or PARTY. however, when it comes to voting on matters that have to do with eternal laws and commandments from God. we are encouraged to vote for those things that promote God's teachings and vote against things that would remove or change God's teachings from our society. Are there restrictions based on race or color concerning who can join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have the priesthood?

No. We believe and know that we are all children of our Father in Heaven. this is one of my favorite passages. it is from the Book of Mormon. 2 Nephi 2625-28, 33 24He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw call men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation. 25Behold, doth he cry unto any, saying Depart from me? Behold, I say unto you, Nay but he saith Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy milk and honey, without money and without price. 26Behold, hath he commanded any that they should depart out of the synagogues, or out of the houses of worship? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. 27Hath he commanded any that they should not partake of his salvation? Behold I say unto you, Nay but he hath given it free for all men... 28Behold, hath the Lord commanded any that they should not partake of his goodness? Behold I say unto you, Nay but all men are privileged the one like unto the other, and none are forbidden. 33...and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness and he ddenieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female and he remembereth the heathen and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile. Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

The most important reason I could say why we proselyte is because we know that the message of this church is for all of Gods children, and is meant to bring them happiness in this life and the life to come. For me personally, the reason why we proselyte, is also because if we are really grateful for what we have, and if it is really that important and has blessed us so much, why wouldn't we want to share it with others. Sharing the message of the restoration or the plan of salvation, or the gospel of Jesus Christ isn't a job, it flows naturally out of love for others. We proselyte not to force others to think the same as us, or to do the same as us, but that simply we proselyte so others can experience the joy that we have come to feel, and to have all the blessings that our Father in Heaven wishes to give all of His children. Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

No. In old testament times People didn't worship Moses, they didn't worship Abraham, they didn't worship any of the other prophets that God has called to the earth. They worshiped God the Father and HIs Son Jesus Christ. And we do the same. Prophets lead Gods people and children here on the earth, but they are not people we worship. Show more Show less

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

We know that after Christ's ministry, and then the ministry of His Apostles, there was a falling a way. certain truths were lost. truths that aren't had in the bible today for one reason or another (ie. miss translation or purposful omitting or changing of certain passages, chapters and even books). Most importantsly, the authority was lost to act and speak in the name of the Lord. With out that authority, or permission from God to do what He would do if He was here, we can not be baptized or do anything else that we need to do to return to live with him again.
