Hi I'm Matthew

I am a fan of Lord of the Rings. I love the scriptures. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in north-west Washington state and served a mission in Pocatello, Idaho and just got back home. I enjoy playing video games with my friends, such as Starcraft and Super Smash Bros. I am a big Lord of the Rings fan for all the movies and the books. I really like math and science, and I plan to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease a couple of months after turning nineteen while I was preparing to serve a full-time mission for the Church. This delayed me from serving a mission for about a year but, with faith, diligence, prayer, and doing everything I could to be healthy enough to go, I made it. I am not perfectly healthy, but a knowledge of Jesus Christ as my savior helps me endure all the challenges of life.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was young I went to church pretty much every sunday with my mom and younger siblings. I was baptized when eight years old by my grandpa. I didn't know much at that time, but I felt like there was something real about Jesus Christ. As I got older being a member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints became my identity as I was the only "Mormon" in my group of friends. It was when I was about sixteen years old that I read the Book of Mormon for the first time. When I started reading I already believed it to be true because of what I heard at church. As I read, a feeling began to build inside me and continued to do so as I read further. This feeling was like a fire being lit in my soul or like the sun rising in my spirit, filling it with light and giving clarity and strength to everything. When I started I believed, before I finished the Book of Mormon I knew it was true, and that knowledge has blessed my life profoundly. I have been able to keep a good attitude and endure through whatever comes my way because I know that the Book of Mormon is true, Jesus Christ lives, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is his church restored to the earth.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by studying the scriptures including the Book of Mormon and the Holy Bible every day, praying, attending Church on Sunday and other activities during the week. I spend time getting together with others that believe the same way I do. I try to be an example of a disciple of Christ at all times reaching out to others and serving or just genuinely caring about them.

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

I never have doubted the Bible to be the word of God. It is a collection of ancient writtings from prophets of God who received his word and wrote it down. I personally love the four gospels depicting the life of Christ. His words are powerful. As an additional witness that the Bible is the word of God the Book of Mormon backs it up and encourages us to read it. Show more Show less

What is faith?

Faith is something I am always learning more about. It is the first principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Nothing happens until we at least have a desire to believe. To have faith in God is to trust him and want his will to be done. When we trust his perfect nature, his absolute knowledge, power, and love, we can't help but want to follow his commandments because we know those are the best things for us to do and we know that he will come through on his promises. At first faith is not a knowledge. We have to 'exercise' our faith by testing the promises of God and doing the things he wants. As we do so and we see the promised results our faith grows. If we keep acting in faith it will continue to grow, if we cease, then the sources of doubt in the world will slowly erode our faith. Faith must be based on truth to produce results. I can have faith that turning on a lightswitch will make the light come on, but if the power is out or the switch is actually for the fan then my faith in that would not produce the desired result. Thankfully, because of God's nature, when we have a true idea about who he is and what he wants he will always give us what he has said he will give us. That is why the restoration of Church and Gospel of Jesus Christ was so important. The world needed, and still needs, the pure doctrines of the Gospel in order to truly exercise faith and thus obtain happiness and salvation. Show more Show less
