Hi I'm Gustavo

i like to make people laugh, i'm a writer, i love dragons, i'm a missionary. and i'm mormon

About Me

i was born in brazil, and grew up there, i am now serving a mission in salt lake city south mission, and i have always been a member. my interests are writing and computer games, but i have to say a full day spent writing a good book would be my favorite thing to do, i love fantasy, and i enjoy sci fi as well, but my main love are dragons, i write a book currently that is my dream to publish it some day, my greatest desire is to make that book a fun adventure where people may simply enjoy, have them see the lessons that the church teach and also know of the standards, all the while enjoying a great plot!

Why I am a Mormon

although i was born and raised a mormon, i had my own conversion as all born and raised mormons must go through i believe. it was not long till i left on my mission and i had faced a dilemma that repeated to me over and over, be it through my leaders or through church talks... i didn't have my testimony of the book of mormon, nor that joseph smith was a prophet, i believed those things were true but i couldn't say i knew for sure, so i set out to read the book of mormon, i had read it before with my family, from cover to cover and i thought i knew all about it, but as i read nothing seemed familiar to me, it was as if i read the book spiritually now, instead of enjoying the story of ammon cutting the arms off the lamanites i now enjoyed the teachings and wisdom of the prophets! many times i said to myself while reading "i don't remember this part of the book!" and so i went through the whole book. once i finished it i knew i had to pray about it, after all just reading wouldn't get me my testimony, and so i closed the book, thought for a moment how to go about this, and knealt down to pray, i started as i normally did, and i did what i never had truly tried before, i talked to heavenly father as i would a normal person... and so i had told him i read the book, and i then said i needed to know if it was true... before i had finished the sentence i felt an incredible feeling flow through my mind and body, i felt a smile across my face and i knew that was the answer, it had to be, for i lived in a small apartment in a city called sao paulo, and there is a very noisy main street in front of it, the sounds of the city tormented me everyday (i am not fond of big cities) and with those sounds on the background, there was no way such feelings could come like that, unless it was the holy ghost testifying of the book's truth... i know that was the answer and now that i knew it was all true i could go out and serve my mission with real purpose! not because my parents told me to but because this was a truth that needed to be shared! and i want all others in the world, specially my good friends around the world, to feel this amazing feeling the gospel brings!

How I live my faith

well right now i live my faith as a missionary! always trying my best to serve those around me! but i am not proud of myself growing up, i frequented church always as was mandatory in our family, and always went, but eventually when it came to pass the sacrament i sighed within my mind, and when i had to go earlier to prepare the sacrament i refused to do it and arrived at the wrong time because i was too lazy... i was not a faithful servant growing up, and i barely even tried to. growing up i always knew there was something though, i knew i wasn't wasting my time, and were it not for the church i wouldn't be who i am right now (in almost all aspects in life) i serve the lord now as he wishes me to, for i know as nephi said he will not give me a commandment that i can not follow

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

Gustavo
coffee tea and alcohol are very harmful drinks, even if you drink it by small portions it will take you down slowly... and when i say that i mean you may become addicted to it, and one thing will lead to another... now in doctrine and covenants god states that this commandment was made to the strongest of the strong and weakest of the weak, and so this means if you are absolutely sure and you even tried it out and you do not get addicted, the commandment still exists and god expects us all to obey it, this ensures that even though now you are good later it wont be a problem. my suggestion is don't even try it out, its not worth it, not to mention it tastes bad... note: some people believe caffeine is the harmful substance in those things, but the true bad substance is the tannic acid found in tea and coffe, those are pretty bad for your stomach, although caffeine isnt the brightest thing, taken in small portions is harmless p.s. tannic acid is used for tanning cowhides Show more Show less

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Gustavo
temples are the most holy places on earth. insomuch that if one unworthy enters it, it wouldn't be so holy anymore, when inside we feel a peace and calm feeling of the spirit, and this is disturbed if one unworthy enters. one can be worthy however, by simply following the commandments and following the standards of the church righteously and without lies, one can enter the temple and enjoy the blessings and the spirit that comes with it. there is nothing secret going on, however the things spoken and done in the temple are very sacred, and should not be spoken outside the temple, this avoids mocking and laughter from those who would not accept such sacred things. want to find out what goes on inside? well join the church and live a worthy life and you can find out, not to mention be part of an amazing blessing that god wants us all to have! :) Show more Show less

In whom should we have faith?

Gustavo
in the bible (john 14:6) Jesus Christ says "i am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the father, but by me" with the atonement of Jesus Christ we are made able to repent of our sins, and to be able to repent we must first have faith in Jesus Christ... faith that he is the Son of God and that he atoned for our sins! therefore if we have faith in Jesus Christ we are following the path to eternal life and salvation Show more Show less

Do Mormons only help Mormons?

Gustavo
of course we feel some sort of attachment to our fellow members in the church, however it's quiet the contrary! i always say that a true mormon would care more about those who are not mormon! as a missionary, i see the importance of members working mostly with the non members and helping them out, it helps people to learn more about the gospel and see that we are not as "wierd" as people think we are! so if you ever meet a mormon that does not help you because you are not a member i guarantee that even the apostles would want to talk him/her how to be a better mormon Show more Show less

What is the priesthood?

Gustavo
the priesthood is the authority god has given to men to perfomr in his name, with the priesthood we are able to perform ordinances such as baptism, the gift of the holy ghost and blessings for the sick and afflicted! the great part about the priesthood is that it is to be used to help those around us, and not for our own personal use, with the priesthood we have the duty to serve the ones in need, and to do God's will. the priesthood is given to all those worthy and is a great blessing for a family! How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Gustavo
the prophets have written many scriptures about God, in them we can learn so many things, from who God is, to what his purpose is, although not anyone can see God and talk to him face to face, we can learn of him through the scriptures, and once we have read the scriptures we can pray to know if those things are true, and then the holy ghost will make manifest unto you, i tried it, it works! have a true intent of heart and you can receive your answer as well. What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Gustavo
well what do we do you ask? well mormons have very intricate lifestyles, maybe even unique you might say. ill say a tipical day i would have when i was younger, and you can see how unique and diferent it is. i would wake up in the morning, do my daily hygiene, once done i would eat a nice breakfast (random each day) then was off to school, in school i studied (of course.) and as all students i was always waiting for the bell to ring, once school was done i would go back home and first thing was drop on the couch tired, then was the time for lunch and chores right after, once done with chores and homework i would play computer or video game, and finally prepare for the night (shower, brush teeth etc...) you might say its actually a very common day, and so i can easily say that mormons have normal lifestyles :) all mormons are people, and we are human, we have the same tendencies and desires, we always want to do that which we enjoy, and of course not always we can, but we try to fulfill our responsibilities in the church, while living a normal life! How do I become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church)?

Gustavo
i think the easiest way to do this is by going on a sunday morning to a church building near you, if you dont know where it is, then you can find it easily by accessing the feature in this site, on the "visit us" tab on the main page there is a find a mormon church, there you will be given like a google earth map! type in your adress information and you will be shown which ward you belong to in your area, and what time they meet, also the name of the ward and the adress! its incredible how technology helps so much nowadays! once there you may find missionaries who will eagerly help you! if not the members will help you and indicate you to the missionaries in your area! Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Gustavo
this is a subject that has always interested me, when i hear people say that mormons are a cult it forces me to tilt my head sideways. "in what way do you mean?" is the first thing that pops in my mind. cult as in: people sacrificing animals or humans to perform satanic rituals? or cult as in: a group of people gathered together for the same benefit or belief. because the dictionary says the second while common belief (and probably some other dictionaries) say the others. if its the second: yes we are a cult, we gather every sunday to worship the lord jesus christ and our heavenly father, and we have the same objective and desires as members of the church, however if it is the first then no... we do not perform 'rituals' nor do we put satan as our worship reason, we know satan to be an evil influence and he fights against us to destroy our happiness. so in other words yes we are a cult but only depends on how you put it. What is a ward/stake/branch?

Gustavo
God's kingdom is very organized, and as such we must be organized as a church, a stake is a group of wards in one area, in my country where i grew up (brasilia) one stake was half the city, but now as i serve in utah i see that one stake here is nearly a neigbourhood! a ward is the group of people that meet in a certain area, this one is relatively bigger compared to branches which mean the same but differ in the size, while a ward is big and has many people, a branch is when there aren't enough people in an area to call it a ward, it is all to organize places and help know size, groups, etc... What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

Gustavo
when this question is asked i try to think which way its meant. when you say nature i think of personality, if that is the case i imagine god being a just and calm being, always with a smile on his face, but serious when it gets down to it, his voice flowing like a calm river in a spring morning, and his patience so intense that overwhelms a human's mind... thats how i imagine him! although im sure only a prophet or apostle would be the only ones able to answer who he truly is. but if by nature you mean what his purpose is, then i suppose its a little different :) god's purpose is to bring us back to his presence, this time as glorified and perfect beings like himself! he wants us to enjoy a happy life, filled with joys and with our families, he wants us to be like him! and although not all of us will achieve that, he still wants us to try our best! Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

Gustavo
although we always had the bible after Jesus Christ and his disciples were gone, and the church had been destroyed, there was no one with the actual reveletion of God to tell us what the bible truly teaches. Other religions formed, but those were being guided by their own knowledge, and although they weren't necessarily bad they did not have the truth... an example, in john chapter 17 during Jesus Christ's intercessory prayer, He tells Heavenly Father that "they may be as one like we are" some religions believe that Jesus Christ and God are one in body... does this mean we have to be one in body? and how do we do it? according to the law of physics (of which God wants to follow) that is impossible, would God want us to do something impossible? it may be confusing at first but this concept is easy to understand once you get it down, the bible has the word of god, and as long as it is translated and interpreted correctly, that is what we believe in! the version of which we believe is the most correct is the king james version. What is the Law of Chastity?

Gustavo
its the law that god had set to protect us from harmful feelings in life. the law tells that we must stay away from sexual relationships before marriage, and also to stay away from anything that could possibly lead to or generate such feelings. by following the law of chastity you can enjoy a strong mind, knowing that you can control yourself and have a freedom to choose what you want is a great blessing! also it allows us to stay away from trouble like teenage pregnancy and other life destroying situations, by following the law of chastity we can also stay away from feelings of heartbreak. when we share such deep feelings with someone we become attached... if we end relationships like that it creates a hole inside us, and we feel sad and lonely... just be patient, wait till after marriage Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Gustavo
the ones that wrote the book of mormon would be the ones in the ancient america's the prophets that lived thousands of years ago, before jesus christ and after, we see the history of the book of mormon go from 600 B.C till about 430 ish A.C the record of the things that happen in the book of mormon are things that happened to the ancient inhabitants of the america's, they teach us and show us by example the things we must and mustn't do, this way we can learn from other's mistakes as well as their wisdom as to how we can be the best followers of Christ! joseph smith simply translated the book of mormon, doing it directly from the plates which was shown to him by God's messenger! Who chooses the Mormon prophet?

Gustavo
God is the only one that can call a prophet, but of course he does it through his servants here on earth, the quorum of the 12 apostles are here for a reason, they help the prophet but one of their callings is to have the authority to ordain the next prophet, all 12 of the apostles must be in unity in terms of choosing who will be the prophet next, and all of them choose prayerfully, meaning they ask God who it must be, God knows who he wants to be his representative, i know for sure this process is inspired of God, and that 12 men could not think the same name sav it be through the revelation of God's will! What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Gustavo
the things which are spiritual can only be seen by spiritual eyes... i believe your spiritual eyes have seen the witness of the truth of the gospel when you acquire a testimony. an example of this would be consider i never have tasted salt before, how can you explain what salt means to me... what does it taste like? no words? salt tastes like salt i believe, you can tell me what it doesnt taste like, but what does it taste like? i know i wouldnt be able to explain it myself, unless i had actually tried it, there is no way to explain what salt tastes like! its only a fact as to wether or not you have tried and received that knowledge! just like salt, the spirit cannot be explained how it feels until you have tried it. you cannot have a testimony until you have tried and showed your faith to God, as it speaks in james 15-6 "if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of god" and it goes on to say "but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering" once you follow that you can receive a testimony! i have received my own testimony, and i tried. so can you. just have faith! ask God, and keep trying your best! you cant feel what i felt, i cant express myself as to how i know it is true, but i can tell you what i did to get that answer Show more Show less

What is faith?

Gustavo
faith is to believe in something or someone you have not seen, faith needs to be a belief in something that is truth as well, an important aspect of faith is to act upon such, for example if you have faith in Christ how do you show that? well there are quiet a few ways actually praying, going to church, reading the scriptures, following the commandments that is what Jesus Christ has asked us to do in order to follow The Father, i haven't seen Jesus Christ but i have faith and i do what he has told me to do, because i know it is true, and i know as i do follow these things i will be happy! and so it is today Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe happens after we die?

Gustavo
this is what i love about the gospel so much. after we die we are immediately taken to the spirit world where our spirits await for us to be resurrected, but this is where i love so much about it! we are then judged according to our works! we stand before God and Jesus Christ who will justly give us what we deserve. we do not suffer for all eternity we do not go to a place where we hate, but we go to a place where we will be comfortable with what we have, where we can be happy for being there and be able to appreciate what we have, we will go to wherever we know is best for us to be, between 3 kingdoms of glory called the celestial, terrestrial and telestial kingdoms, each one has a glory that differs from each other 1 Corinthians 15 or doctrine and covenants 76 but they are all still kingdoms of glory! Joseph smith has spoken that the glory of the telestial kingdom which is the lowest of them all is so beautiful even to pass the beauty of our current world to a point we cannot even imagine! this can only mean that the highest degree the celestial kingdom can only be so great that if we could but glimpse it we would not think twice to do our best to reach such place! i know that the things which are spoken of concerning this matter in the scriptures are true, the prophets have received this revelation in our days that we may know that after this, there is more! much much more! and we get to be with our friends and family too! what more can we ask for? Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

Gustavo
give a man a fish and he will be happy for a day, teach a man to fish and he will be happy for years. it's as simple as that, people may try to take the easy way out, and coast on others, but if one strives to be self reliant one will not need to worry about wether or not others influence their survival. depending on others can be dangerous, and that is why it's better to know how to fish then to receive fish. and you know what they say... no pain no gain, if you live off of ease then you will live off of least (i came up with that rhyme myself!)
