Hi I'm Dennis

I'm a brother, I'm a reader of books, I love sports.. and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am 19 years old, I was born in Santa Rosa, CA. My family and I moved to Australia when I was 5, and have lived in Sydney ever since. I have an older brother, two younger brothers and a younger sister. I am serving the Lord in the Australia Melbourne Mission, and loving every minute of it.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into it. But that isn't the reason that I am a Mormon. I chose to be one, like all children that are born into the Church, there came a time that I had to choose whether I wanted to follow the things that my parents taught me, or to go my own way. At the tender age of 15, I was thinking about the things that my parents had taught me. I wondered about Jesus Christ, and about how his sacrifice could possibly effect me, or why it should be important to me. Yes, I had attended church many times, and I knew all the answers to all the questions that my teachers would ask me. But, deep down inside, I was only really doing it because it is what my family and my friends were doing. I began to gain more friends from school and sports, and their standards were in different in almost every way from mine. I was stumped, I had a choice to make. Was I going to follow after my friends? Or was I going to follow Christ? Because the two paths were just not compatible to walk at the same time. One night, I was thinking pretty hard about this decision that was laid before me, I thought how it would effect me, my family and my future. I was so confused, and I didn't know how I was going to make this decision. I didn't know what was going to be best for me in the long run. I remembered my Dad and my seminary teachers saying, "Read the scriptures and pray. That's how you get answers." It all seemed too simple, yet so hard at the same time. I was busy with sports, friends, school, girls and work. How was I to fit these other things in there as well? Then I realised. I had some spare time in that moment, I wasn't really doing much, just laying in bed, thinking. So I pulled out my scriptures, and I opened it up at a random spot. I read a scripture that seemed to speak directly to me. It was in 3 Nephi 5:13 and it reads: "Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life." I felt a warm feeling come over me, I knew that I wanted to make this scripture apply to me, I wanted to be a disciple of Christ, I wanted to share the Gospel with others, and ultimately, I wanted eternal life, meaning life with God and my loved ones, forever. I then followed that up with a prayer to confirm it, just to make sure that was the way that my Father in Heaven wanted me to go. The Spirit hit me in the same fashion, there was no way that I could deny what I had felt. Since then, I have always known of the truth of the Gospel, and how much Heavenly Father loves me. I may have strayed occasionally, but I always know that I have to come back to the fold of God, because He loves me, and He wants me to be with Him, and do the right thing.

How I live my faith

As a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I get to live my faith in a whole new way. I have the oppurtunity to share my testimony with people everyday, in so many different ways. With the Lord's assistance, I bring people closer to Him, by helping them make and keep covenants, or promises, with God. I am so blessed to watch peoples progression towards fully realising God's love for them, and it brings me joy, beyond measure. For the next 2 years, this will be my blessing. To teach and to serve the people within the boundaries of the Australia Melbourne Mission. I forget myself for 2 years, and the Lord helps me to grow by presenting me with oppurtunities to serve on every side. From helping someone mow a lawn, to taking down Christmas lights, to delivering food to the sick and afflicted, all the way to building a wall in a house. You name it, I will do it, because as a missionary, I am the Lord's representative, and in all cases. So I think, what would Jesus do, if He was here? In every case, He would help in whatever way possible, and so we must do that also.

Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

Dennis
Having the authority to baptise is the most important part of the whole thing! When Jesus Christ walked the Earth, He knew of this same truth. He didn't just go to the local synagogue and ask the rabbi there to baptise him, did he? No, He walked all the way to the river Jordan, and sought out John the Baptist. Why? Because John the Baptist had the authority to baptise, and Jesus Christ knew this. And so it is with us, we need to seek out the people who have the authority to baptise, and be baptised of them. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the Restored Gospel, has that authority, the Priesthood authority of God to perform the ordinances of Salvation. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Dennis
The Book of Mormon is the best book in the whole world! It is also the most correct of any book, within it's covers is found the answers to all of life's little questions, and the big ones as well. Without the Book of Mormon, I wouldn't be able to sit here and type on this computer. It tells of a group of people who left Jerusalem just before the Babylonians attacked and took them into bondage, it talks about their dealings with God and the prophets who lived there. Most importantly, it documents Jesus Christ's appearance to them, and the things that he shared with them. Through prayer, we can come to know that this volume of scripture is true, and that Jesus really did appear to these people. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Dennis
As missionaries, we will share messages that are centered on Jesus Christ. We share with you about how the church was restored through Joseph Smith, the wonderous Plan of Happiness and Salvation that our Heavenly Father has instituted for us, and the Gospel which Jesus Christ Himself would share with you, if he was in our stead. There are other things which we will share, but they will normally be mixed in with these 3 'lessons' for example, The Law of Chastity, Obedience to God's commandments and the Law of Tithing could be another. These fit in perfectly with the other messages that we share. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Dennis
What about all those people who died when there wasn't the truth upon the Earth? Is it fair that they go to hell because they didn't get a chance to hear the Gospel? Certainly not! As proxies we give them the chance to follow the example of Jesus Christ and come closer to Him through baptism. You need a body to get baptised. Show more Show less
