Hi I'm Jen

I am an American wife and mother living in the Peoples Republic of China and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a mother of two kids, a boy and a girl. We are an American family who recently moved to China for my husband's job. Previously I had only lived in California so China is quite a change! I taught elementary school full time for ten years and five years part-time. I love to be with my family and friends, my motto is "the more the merrier". I am at my happiest when my home is filled with people I love. I also enjoy running and reading and shopping!

Why I am a Mormon

I wasn't always Mormon. You see I am the youngest of five children, kind of an "after thought". My parents had both brought different religions to their marriage, Baptist and Catholic. By the time I came along religion wasn't something formally practiced in our home. My eldest brother joined the Mormon church when I was a baby. Some of my earliest memories are making audio tapes for him while he was serving a mission for the church in Scotland. At that time, my middle sister became interested in the Mormon church. Because she was just a teenager my parents wanted her to think about it before she committed, eventually she was baptized. That was all the religion I had had growing up. I knew about God. I prayed to God, but that was it. Fast forward fifteen years to college. I was just ready to graduate with my bachelors degree and move back to Northern California from Southern California. I met two cute missionaries. I decided I wanted to ask them some questions. I had heard "things" about my brother and sister's religion that I knew were not true and I wanted to defend the Mormons. But first I needed the facts. These cute boys came over and began teaching me about something so much bigger than anything I'd ever dreamed. There were answers to questions. I knew right away that these answers were true. I felt different than I ever had before. I felt loved by my creator, no matter what choices I had made. More importantly there was a plan of happiness, a plan of salvation, for me and for everyone. I went to church for the first time and looked at families who were normal people but seemed different. That Sunday I decided I wanted to be in that same place every Sunday for the rest of my life. My family is unique. A Baptist and a Catholic now have three Mormon children. We are all very close. I do not want our bond to end when we die. I want to be with my family for all of eternity. Through our Savior, Jesus Christ, I know that this is possible. That is why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

Our church is not a "once a week" church. It is a wonderful blessing that in our church we believe in nurturing our talents. Sometimes we are to nurture talents we don't even know we have. Each member of our church is asked to fulfill an assignment. Our organizations, from the congregation to the children's classes, are all volunteers. I have had the privilege of teaching women, children, conducting music (one of those undiscovered "talents"), plan fellowship activities and provide humanitarian aide. Currently I am teaching children ages 4-7, from three different countries. I also have the opportunity to visit women in our congregation to serve any of their needs. We take this seriously, as we are acting as Jesus Christ would if He were on earth. On a daily basis I work on my personal relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ. I learn about him through prayer and scriptures and try my best to follow His example. I am not perfect, far from it. But we are promised that if we try our very best each and every day we will return to live with Him and our Heavenly Father. Being a member of this church is a big commitment, but the reward is eternal salvation.

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

God is our Heavenly Father. He is also the Heavenly Father of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Both Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have bodies. We were created in HIs image. I know that my Heavenly Father loves me, as I am His daughter. He shows me his love by blessing me. He never punishes and wants us to succeed. We show him our respect by obeying him and following the example of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less
