Do you want to chat with a missionary?

We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi I'm Hilary.

I'm a favorite aunt. I'm a little sister. I'm competative. I'm happy! And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love life! I am the youngest of seven children and love being an aunt. I love my family so much and am constantly amazed at the lessons they teach me. I majored in Piano Performance and have recently enjoyed competing in duo piano competitions. I am married to my best friend who makes me grateful for him every day. I love to do anything outside (especially in the sunshine!), watch movies (mostly intense action ones), and read book. I love to laugh and love feeling peaceful.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I also lived in an area where there were lots of members of the church. Becuase of that, I was faced with a crucial decision Do I really NEED to find out if this all TRUE? I know that the principles of the gospel I've been living are good... isn't "good" enough? When we find something that is good, we are happy! We don't question, we don't really feel a need to seek it out more. Good is good! But what I discovered, becuase I DID decide to seek it out, was TRUTH. And truth has a far greater worth to the soul when weighed against the struggles we all face. My search consisted of doing the same things I had been doing all my life- going to church, reading the scriptures, trying to make good friends, avoiding bad situations... but something was different. My heart and my desires had changed. I really wanted to know if it was all from God. Through this process my relationship with God strengthened. I prayed becuase I had the desire to know God and to seek His counsel. I read the scriptures becuase I felt a need to learn and to apply the principles in my life. I went to church to remember and honor the Savior, Jesus Christ, and to receive the blessings of the sacrament. I started making better choices for the right reasons. When I made this change, my answers came quickly and very strongly. I felt such peace and assurance. I continue to feel that same peace each day as I try to draw closer to God. I know that God loves me. He wants me to be happy and to do all I can to help those around me be happy, too. He has put TRUTH on the earth so we don't have to choose between all of the "good" things in the world. If we follow the principles Christ taught, we can discover the truth and be happy. I love being a follower of Jesus Christ. It has helped me realize who I am and, more importantly, who I CAN be.

How I live my faith

I would say, first and foremost, that I try to live the principles that Jesus Christ taught- forgiveness, charity, service, repentance, faith...etc. Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints helps me to strengthen Christlike attributes. The organization is set up so that we learn how to serve, how to love, how to repent. By studying the scriptures each day and praying throughout the day, my faith in Jesus Christ turns into actions. My goal is to be changed so I can help others do the same! I am currently serving as a full time missionary in Portland, Oregon and loving it!! The gospel of Jesus Christ has changed my life- it is such a blessing to invite others to allow it to change theirs.

How can we increase our faith in Jesus Christ?

Hilary.
The biggest way I've found to increase my faith in Christ is to live what He taught. Set goals where you want to be spiritually and make specific, daily plans to get there. Humbly seek His help and the help of those around you. You will feel His help. You will become more and more aware of your weaknesses and great potential and will realize how much help you've already received from Him! Show more Show less

What is the Law of Chastity?

Hilary.
The Law of Chastity is God's way of inviting us to experience pure joy in all relationships. He has promised us if we obey these commandments, we will save ourselves from a lot of heartache, pain and potential illness. The family is important to God and by keeping the Law of Chastity, the family can remain as the number one strength of society. The Law of Chastity includes Abstaining from any sexual relationships outside the bonds of marriage. Keeping our thoughts, words and actions pure. "Would I think, say or do this if God were present?" ... for He is!! Understanding and obeying the doctrine that marriage is between a man and a woman- avoiding any practices or situations that disagree with this commandment. Obey it ourselves and encourage others to do the same. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Hilary.
"It is by grace we are saved, after all we can do" 2 Nephi 2523- Book of Mormon "All we can do" means to repent. If we repent and repent over and over again, we will still fall short. It is by the grace of God that the Savior can and will make up the rest.  Show more Show less

Why do Mormons baptize their new members?

Hilary.
No unclean thing can enter into the presence of God. God wants all His children to return to Him. The authority to baptize is in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints- the same authority that Christ gave to His ancient apostles. We baptize people who have the desire to return to God. Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Hilary.
Mormonism or Mormons is a nickname given to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because we read from the Book of Mormon. Mormon was a prophet that compiled his writings and the writings of other ancient prophets that lived in the ancient Americas. We love and worship Jesus Christ- all scriptures testify that "there is no other way nor name given under heaven wherrby man can be saved" except it be through Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Hilary.
Absolutely! Heavenly Father wants us to know Him- He wants us to know what we must do in order to be with Him again. Through His word, we can receive personal guidance. Through His word we can know truth. I am thankful for the words He has spoken in the past and for the words He is still speaking today. Show more Show less

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Hilary.
YES! Families are designed to be eternal. Heavenly Father wants us to be happy HERE and after we DIE (eternity is happening now!). We are married and have families HERE... and they can continue after we die if we follow His plan by making covenants in the temple, and then staying true to those promises throughout our life. What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

Hilary.
Just as the Savior used a few loaves of bread and a few fishes to feed a multitude... so can our small offering help many of God's children! When teaching people about the gospel as a missionary, they almost always have received a Book of Mormon from us. We leave them pamphlets to read to clarify what we have taught. We invite them to learn more about the church programs. All of these are provided through the tithing of members of the church. Without tithing, we wouldn't have temples to make covenants, churches to worship, materials to study and learn from, and we wouldn't be able to help many around the world come to understand the gospel. Why is it important for us to take care of our bodies? Why are our bodies called temples of God in the Bible?

Hilary.
Our bodies are gifts from God and are a "house" for our Spirit. Our Spirits are so precious to Heavenly Father- we are His children! He wanted us to be able to come and live on earth for a time, so we could learn and face opposition. We needed a body to do this. If we take good care of our bodies, our Spirit will be able to communicate with God better. Show more Show less

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Hilary.
Being able to go inside a temple isn't about being Mormon- just being a member of the church isn't enough to enter. It is God's house- we must be clean and worthy. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been baptized by proper authority (being cleansed from sin). If we remain clean by living righteously, continuing to repent and taking the sacrament each week, we remain clean and can enter God's house. Show more Show less

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Hilary.
"The triumph of Jesus CHrist over spiritual death by His suffering and over physical death by His resurrection is called the Atonement." Becuase of the Atonement- we can be "at-one" with God again, by accepting Christ's sacrifice through repentance. There needed to be an infinite and eternal sacrifice. We alone cannot ever pay the price for the mistakes we have made. We alone cannot conquer physical death. Because of Christ's sacrifice, death is not the end. Because of Christ's sacrifice, we can choose how to spend eternity. We can choose to have His help in overcoming sin. Show more Show less

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Hilary.
The world is all about becoming happy, finding peace, experiencing joy, having success, and answering life's greatest questions. So... if you had found all of that in one place- wouldn't you want to share it? By living the gospel of Jesus Christ, we can find true joy in living, understand why we are here, know what we need to do, come to know our potential and how to strive for it, and lasting peace. Missionaries go around and invite others to hear the message of Jesus Christ and His restored gospel because we want to invite others to experience the joy we've experienced. Show more Show less

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Hilary.
When someone says they want to share their testimony, they are wanting to express what they believe, what they have come to know by the Spirit. You can gain a testimony by seeking spiritual truth (not just from the scriptures, but through prayer, service and other life experiences) and asking God to confirm what you have felt or thought. Once something is confirmed to you by the Holy Spirit, that is added to your testimony. Show more Show less

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Hilary.
The Church of Jesus Christ is a world-wide church directed by the Savior, Jesus Christ. Each congregation is supported by the service of the local members, each doing their part to keep that branch of the church running and functioning so all are uplifted and come closer to Christ. We sing songs, listen to assigned speakers, are taught from the scriptures and share experiences with one another. Most importantly, we worship the Savior through our reverence, our thoughts, and by taking the sacrament. Visitors are ALWAYS welcome. Members will be more than understanding if you explain that you are coming to see what it is like, or if you are on a search- for they had to ask questions and experiment, as well! Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Hilary.
Baptism is an important covenant and ordinance that enables us to return to God. Many people have lived and died without ever having the opportunity to hear about Jesus Christ, or His restored gospel. How would that be just for God to deny them the opportunity to return and live with Him again? God is perfectly just and perfectly merciful. Baptisms for the dead is our way of giving those that have passed on the opportunity to accept the ordinance done in their behalf. Show more Show less

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Hilary.
We have the scriptures so we can learn about God's plan, learn from other's experiences, and see what God has instructed us to do. Because it is God's word, we are able to feel the Spirit as we read, which can guide us, uplift us, and help us understand more clearly. As you make scripture study a part of your everyday schedule, I can promise that you will feel closer to Heavenly Father. You will find your desires to do good things growing and your desires to do evil things fading away. Reading the scriptures is our armor we must put on everyday if we are to be free of temptation. What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Hilary.
The missionaries have specific lessons that they teach to help others understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. As they come to your home, however, ask questions. Be open with your concerns and your needs. They will pray at least once together before coming to your home that they will be able to understand your specific needs and that they will know how to help or direct you. The missionaries will want to read from the scriptures, share what they know is true, and invite you to come to know those things for yourself. This is the most important message in the world and they want to share it with you. Show more Show less

In whom should we have faith?

Hilary.
We should have faith in Jesus Christ. To have faith in Him means to trust him, believe in Him and depend on Him. Each choice we make, each problem we face can be better managed as we seek to strengthen our faith in Christ. If you don't have a faith in Christ, seek to develop faith in Him by learning about Him from the scriptures and applying His teachings into your life. Show more Show less
