Hi I'm Shawny

I love music, gardening, and being a mother. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love people, and serving them brings me personal satisfaction and joy. I am fortunate to be able to bring my love of people and music together as I teach piano lessons. I love to garden, and my husband is grateful since he hates to pull weeds. I am a mother of four children. A son who is studying the law, a daughter who is a neuro-science major, a son who plays the string bass magnificently, and another daughter who plays soccer for her university. So I love lawyers, brains, orchestra concerts, and division championships. I am a new grandmother and that's almost the best thing in the world.

Why I am a Mormon

To tell you why I am a Mormon is to tell you why I am me. My faith and devotion to Jesus Christ is I believe what and who I am. All that I do, or refrain from doing in my life is centered on my belief of who I am, where I came from, why I am here on this earth at this time, and where I will go when my life is through. I am so grateful for a knowledge of Jesus Christ, and that He is my brother and He knows me as personally as my own earthly brothers do. He is my Savior and He lived upon this earth to be for us an example of righteous, a teacher of truth, and a Savior of all mankind. I am so grateful for the scriptures and find solace in my life through the words of Christ. What wonderful gifts of guidance and instruction from God are the scriptures. They are an instruction manual of life, so-to-speak. Every life situation, every challenge and question, can be answered by searching the pages of the scriptures and going directly to our Heavenly Father in prayer. We have a living prophet upon the earth today. He is as Moses, Noah, or Abraham. Our Heavenly Father reveals His words to us through His living prophet. These thing I know are true.

How I live my faith

One way I live my faith is by being aware of negative or evil influences in the world and how they affect my family and the families of my community. Some friends and I have formed a coalition for community standards and as part of this coalition we have worked with, and supported our city officials in efforts to remove adult businesses from our community. We have called several billboard companies and voiced our opposition to their advertising that is inappropriate for children, and those billboards have been changed. We are vocal in asking our local retailers to move inappropriate advertisements from a highly visual place in the store, to one less seen by young children. I believe if we all make an effort together, we can begin to rid these evil influences from the lives of our children and the children in our communities.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Shawny
When asked if every young man should serve a mission, the Church answers yes, and the Lord answers yes. Our son served a mission in Mexico when he was 19 years old. Prior to his mission, he was attending college, dating, working and experiencing all life had to offer him. When he accepted a call to serve, he put all these things aside, forgot himself, and went to serve the Lord by serving, teaching and loving His children. Our son left us as a boy, and returned to us a man. He had grown through experiences of trials, disappointment, and hard work. He had an appreciation of his family, his country and a deep love and reverence for God and His Son. What parent wouldn't want that for their son? The question is also asked, should every young lady serve a mission? Girls are not required to serve as are young men, but I chose to serve a mission and did so in the country of Peru. It was the best decision of my life. I am a better daughter, mother and wife because of the things I learned and experienced in the mission field. My parents have also been blessed to serve several missions together for the church. One such mission was on a small island teaching the young people of the area about the scriptures and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It has been a blessing for them to spend time with one another serving throughout the world. Although we have missed having them with us, our families have been blessed because of their devotion and service to the Lord. Show more Show less
