Hi I'm Dustin Howell

I'm a Mormon, right now I am serving a mission in Portland, Oregon. I love movies, video games, books, comics, and drinking soda.

About Me

I'm 23 right now. I served a mission in Portland, Oregon and loved it. Even the hard times. I'm going to college right now. I love watching movies, the dark knight is my favorite. I also love video games like Batman Arkham City, Halo and all the Lego games. I love being outside too, but I only like sports I don't have to be a team on. Like I like to just shoot hoops more than play basket ball. I love music, especially classic rock and movie scores. I even learned how to play the viola in high school. My Dad is a mechanic and I have been able to work with him but I am not as good. I love to lift weights, exercise, read books (especially comics), and have a good laugh.

Why I am a Mormon

I wasn't always active in the church when I was young. I always believed in God, but I didn't know who Jesus Christ was and why He was important to me. When I became a teenager, I realized I desperately needed God in my life, so I started praying. After my parents signed me up, against my will at first, to Seminary, I grew to love the Book of Mormon and because of it, I grew to know who Christ is. When I read such verses as, "And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind...he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy...that he may know...how to succor his people according to their infirmities." (Alma 7). I know without a doubt that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer and because of Him, I can be forgiven for my sins and that He knows what I go through and feel because He's been there and through it all. I testify that our Father in Heaven is our Father, He loves us and answers our prayers because He really does care about us. I know that because of Them and Their priesthood that They restored to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith, I can live with all of those I love for all time and eternity. My family, my friends and one day, my own wife and kids. I know that my Redeemer Lives.

How I live my faith

It's a day by day process. You can't just go to church one day and the rest of the week do other things. I do my best by trying to pray and read my scriptures each day. I pray many times throughout the day because I know that my Father in Heaven wants to hear from us and I just can't make it through life without him. Prayer is a really big thing for me. It's been through much prayer that I've grown close to my Father in Heaven and felt His boundless love. I also do my best to fulfill my callings, home teaching and help others. The best thing I can do is to remember Jesus Christ and all that He did for me. All that he went through for me and for everyone else. Then, I go and do the things that He's asked me to do. I know that through the Atonement of Christ, all things are possible and anyone can change.

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

Dustin Howell
Christ set up His church a certain way with apostles and He gave them the authority to preach the gospel. He even called 70 others. We believe His church has to be set up the same way cause God never changes so why would His Church change. When Christ ascended, Peter became the leader of the twelve, which means he's the prophet, and then they, the apostles, called another apostle to fill Judas' spot so if 12 apostles weren't needed why did they even bother to call another one? 12 Apostles are a sign of the true church. Ephesians 2:19-20 Show more Show less

Who chooses the Mormon prophet?

Dustin Howell
God. Just like in acts, the apostles pray about who should be the next prohpet and through the Holy Ghost, God inspires them who should be the next prophet. He also prepares the person throughout his life so that he can be an apostle so he can get called. Prophets were also chosen to be prophets before they were born. They can still chose otherwise, but the blessings are there waiting for them if they chose to follow God. Show more Show less

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Dustin Howell
By reading, and actually studying the scriptures and praying about them we can grow closer to God and come to know who He is. Don't treat it like a story book with cool characters, it is fact. The only way to know if they are true is by actually reading them and praying about them. I came to know who God is and why He loves me only be reading the scriptures, both Book of Mormon and New Testament. Anyone can if they do as he asks. By knowing who God is he can guide us and teach us His commandments. His commandments, which are in the scriptures, keep us safe. They don't hold us back, like some would think, but they give us freedom. Not steeling keeps us out of jail and treating your parents with respect brings love to the home. Baptism is one commandment and the cool part about it is after we are baptized by proper authority, we get the constant companion of the Holy Ghost. He is a member of the Godhead but he is a spirit. He can guide us through life like a blind guide dog guides the blind guy to saftey. This works only as long as we do our best to follow God and keep His commandments. When we mess up, we can repent, or change, and ask forgiveness from God and because of Jesus Christ we can actually be forgiven. Show more Show less

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Dustin Howell
Well Jesus Christ was all about serving others. The more selfish we are, the more alone we are. If we serve those we love, like the Savior did, our love for them grows and theirs for us can grow. They can still choose but it helps. Plus, keeping God's commandments, praying together, reading together, going to church together, Family home evenings help out a ton. The Prophet can give major guidance from God. You name it. Show more Show less

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

Dustin Howell
First off, Abraham was commanded to practice it as were other prophets. We believe that it's only ok when God says so. Not everyone practiced it in the church, they had to be called to it. And, people used to do it because so many men were killed so people who had the ability to could take them in and provide for them. The practice was ended by revelation from God, read the declarations at the end of doctorine and covenants. When the church was threatened God told the prophet to discontinue the practice so that people weren't killed and the temples weren't destroyed. Those who practice it now are excomunicated from our church, aka they have to leave if they don't change. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about Jesus Christ? Do Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?

Dustin Howell
Yes, Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. The Messiah, Redeemer, The Only Begotten of the Father. He is awesome. He has felt exactly what we have all gone through when he went into the garden of Gethsemane and died on the cross. He knows exactly how to help us through lifes problems because he's been there. He also suffered for our sins which means we can ask Heavenly Father, God, for fogiveness and if we change our ways and do our best in life we can make it to live with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again. Is it true that Jesus appeared in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection according to the Book of Mormon?

Dustin Howell
Yes He did. 3rd Nephi chapter 11. We believe God is God of the whole earth and not just one country. He said He had other sheep and he ment them in other countries. He visited HIs other sheep in the Americas and others that even we don't know about. Jesus Christ is the savior of the whole world and all of God's children are loved by Him. He is no respector of persons, doesn't hold one more important than the other, and its the same with people on other continents. The only way to know if this actually happened though is to read about it and pray about it. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

Dustin Howell
Becuase it is the word of God. It is about what God has done throughout the ages in Jerusalem and how he created the world. In it we learn about the Savior Jesus Christ and why he is important to our salvation. Without him we can't make it. Just cause we read the Book of Mormon doesn't mean we don't read the Bible. They work together to testify of Jesus Christ and that he Lives. Show more Show less

In whom should we have faith?

Dustin Howell
We need to have faith in Jesus Christ. He alone is the way we can return to God our Father. He atoned for our sins, He suffered every thing we would ever go through. He is our Savior, Redeemer and Lord. We pray to Heavenly Father in His name. We must trust Him. The way that I actually came to understand who Jesus Christ was, was by reading the Book of Mormon. It turned me to read the New Testament. Both testify of Him and I know that if we pray about what we read and ask God if Jesus Christ is our Savior we will get an answer that He is. Are there restrictions based on race or color concerning who can join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have the priesthood?

Dustin Howell
No not at all. Anyone can come and God doesn't say go away to anyone. Read in the Book of Mormon 2nd Nephi chapter 26 verses 23-28 and 33. All of us are children of God and we are all brothers and sisters. One big family no matter what you look like or who you are. All are welcome. Show more Show less

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Dustin Howell
The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. Think of the God head like a sports team. You got the owner, the coach and the team captain or quarter back. God is the owner, Jesus the coach, and the Holy Ghost is like the quarter back. He guides us through life as long as we listen to him. Without Him we are walking through life kind of like blind people. With the Holy Ghost, he is like the blind guide dog. We still have a choice to follow him, but he can see dangers ahead and if we don't listen to him we can get hurt. He is also the comforter. He knows how to heal our wounds cause God know what we go through to the exact detail. He can uplift us and give us hope. He can also teach us knowledge and God can answer our questions through him. He speaks to our thoughts and feelings and that is how we recive our answers. Some people expect something big like an appearence by an angel when they want to know what's true. God doesn't work like that usually, He sends the Holy Ghost to answer us. It's more an act of faith that way. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Dustin Howell
Well, if one is dressed modestly there is the less likely hood of someone thinking "thoughts" where as if someone isn't dressed modestly those "thoughts" are going to come in. God made man and women so that families could me made here on earth. We are all apart of God's family and having kids is sacred and an amazing blessing. I can't wait until I am a parent. That power is only supposed to be used when the guy and girl are married cause then they made the commitment and are working together. Not that that means its all perfect or they won't seperate, or that unmarried people are bad, but God wants marriage to be eternal and if a relationship is based on anything but love it can't last. Doing those things before marriage messes with the head and leads to other problems that's why its so important to wait cause then it strengthens that love those people have and their self control. Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

Dustin Howell
Paying the 10 percent thing is called tithing. It is an act of faith. Abraham paid tithes also and in Malachi 3:8-10 it talks about how blessed we will be for it. I know sometimes money is tight, especially now adays but we wouldn't have what we have if it weren't for God. Think of it this way, we lose 10 but we get to keep 90. One of my best friends told me of when his family was struggling and it was either paying tithing or getting food, they paid their tithing and the next day a check came in the mail that helped them out. Now some might say it was coincedence, but God knows what we're going to do and he knew they were going to be faithful and got them the check. Either way, its by faith and because of tithing we can build temples and help out our dead ancestors and be sealed to our families for eternity. The money we give doesn't go into someones pocket, no paid ministers, it goes to building churches and temples and they help us so it actually comes back to us ten fold. Show more Show less

What is the First Vision?

Dustin Howell
Joesph Smith was a young boy who wanted to know which church was true. He was like 14 and at the time there were tons of different faiths each one saying I'm right. He didn't know what to do so he read the bible. He read James 1 verse 5, look it up. He learned from it that if you lack wisdom you can ask God and he'll tell you. So he went out early one spring morning into the woods and prayed out loud to know which church was true. In answer to his prayer, Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to him. Joseph wrote “When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” They told him that none of the churches at the time had the authority from God to run his true church, but they called him to be the next prophet and told him they were going to give him the authority to restore Christ's true church to the earth. Wanna know if this is true, Read the Book of Mormon and Pray about it. You can't know if the drivers manual will teach you how to drive if you never read about it and God will tell you the truth through your feelings. I've had to do this and he told me through my feelings that this is all true. Show more Show less

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Dustin Howell
Yes for sure. The savior gave Peter the power to seal stuff on earth and what he did was also sealed in heaven. God is all about families cause we are his kids and a part of his families. Why would we have love if it didn't matter in the next life. How could something like that die or end. We will be with our loved ones and if we get married God's way we'll be together forever. See, God gives men the authority to act in His name called the Priesthood. With this you can baptize, give the holy ghost, get married and do these things for those that have passed on. In the temples we can get married together and sealed with our kids. If we have kids after we are sealed, they are already sealed to us by birth. Its really awesome. Show more Show less

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Dustin Howell
Through Prayer is the big one. You can't know a person you don't talk to. Heavenly Father hears our prayers. Just cause it isn't always immediate or the way we want it doesn't mean he doesn't care. What's important to us is important to him. He loves us all. Reading the scriptures helps cause that's how we learn of him. I once heard, if you want to talk to God, pray. If you want God to talk to you, read the scriptures. Obeying the commandments helps cause it shows us we are willing to listen to the answers he gives us. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Dustin Howell
Yes of course we believe in the Bible, it is the word of God and we read it and teach from it. We believe that God has revealed more scripture, the Book of Mormon. While the Bible is about the Israelites and their journey's, the Book of Mormon is about the Nephites. We believe God is everybody's Father and He didn't just talk to those in one country but many countries. I love reading about the Saviors life and the old testament stories. I have learned much from it and it is a true book just as is the Book of Mormon. I've prayed about both and recieved answeres for both. Show more Show less
