Hi I'm Keenan

I'm a husband, father, snowboard and wakeboard enthusiast, medical student and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a devoted husband and father. I have been married for 5 years, and I have a beautiful little girl. Currently, I'm attending medical school. My passions in life include snowboarding, wakeboarding, playing sports, and being active outdoors. Generally these things help me to spend time with my family, and give us fun activities to do together.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in the church, so I was taught the principles of the Mormon faith at a young age, but there came a time in my life where I needed to find out for myself if the church was really true. As a teenager and young adult there are strong pressures to do things that are against the teachings of my faith, and without a personal conviction I don't think that I would have been able to maintain the standards of faith that I was raised in. So, I decided to find out for myself if the church was true and if I had a conviction of the Book of Mormon. I read the Book of Mormon and took the challenge found in the book of Moroni at the end of the Book of Mormon to ask God if the things I read were true. I knelt down and prayed for what I considered to be a pretty long time, and the answer didn't come right away. As I considered why I hadn't received an answer, I thought about the scriptures I had learned which state when you are praying to God for an answer you must "study it out your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right." So I thought about what I had read, what I had been taught, and what I had felt going to church, and I reasoned that it made a lot of sense that it was true. I returned to God in prayer letting him know that I believed it was true, and he gave me a confiming witness through the Holy Ghost that it was true. I received a feeling of joy, love, peace, and understanding that is difficult to express in words. But I know that I received an answer from God that the Book of Mormon was true. From that time forward I knew why I was a Mormon, and I knew why I chose to follow the teachings and standards of the church. Once I knew that the Book of Mormon was true, I knew that Jesus Christ is my Savior (and he is real), I knew that Joseph Smith must be a true prophet, because God wouldn't bring forth a true book of scripture through a false prophet, and I now knew that the Church of Jesus Christ was restored through Joseph Smith. Since this time I have had several more experiences which have strengthened my conviction of the truthfulness of Mormonism. I see now how people are happy and successful as they follow the counsel of the modern day prophets and apostles in the Mormon church. As I continue to learn more it continues to make more sense. My faith gives me purpose, hope, guidance, understanding, and love for others. My faith is like the north star in my life. It is constant and unchanging and always leads me to joy and happiness.

How I live my faith

I feel that I try to live my faith in the simple day to day things that I do. Everyday I try to study the scriptures. I pray to my Father in Heaven everyday. When I pray I thank him for the many blessings I have, and I ask him for things that I want and need. I try to show kindness and love to others, especially to my wife and daughter. Every week I attend church and fulfill my responsibility in the church. Right now I get to be in the Nursery with children from 18 months to 3 years, and I love it. I try to teach them that God and Jesus are real, and that they love these little children. Every week my wife and I have a night where we study a gospel topic, have a fun activity as a family, and try to teach our young daughter about our Father in Heaven and our Savior. To me, the little things are how I try to live my faith. I'm far from perfect, but I'm trying to keep God's commandments. I don't lie, cheat, or steal, and I try to treat everyone else with kindness, love, and respect. I think that living my faith is a journey, not a one-time event. The journey isn't always easy, and sometimes I make wrong turns. However, the Lord has given me guides to help me know the way and keep me on the right path.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Keenan
No. Joseph Smith is respected as a great prophet. For me, I admire Joseph Smith just as I do ancient prophets such as Noah, Abraham, and Moses. They were great men who did what God asked of them. I look up to Joseph Smith because he was a good example of faith and obedience, and he was a great instrument in the hands of the Lord. We don't worship Joseph Smith. However, we worship our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ, and our ultimate example is and always will be our Savior, Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Keenan
The best book on the planet! Joking aside, the Book of Mormon is a record of ancient scripture. It is similar to the Bible, because it was written by ancient prophets who talked with God and gave guidance to the people around them. However, the Book of Mormon is a record of prophets in the Americas from roughly 600 BC to 400 AD. It is a religious history of the people during that time. The highlight of the Book of Mormon is the visit of the Savior to these people of the Americas after his death and resurrection in Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon was written by prophets who would engrave upon "gold plates." The last prophet hid these plates in the ground. Joseph Smith was later led to this record, and he translated the Book of Mormon by the power of God. The Book of Mormon is proof that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, and that he was used as an instrument in God's hands to restore the Church of Jesus Christ to the Earth. Like all scripture, the Book of Mormon contains teachings of God for us. When I read the Book of Mormon, I find answers to my prayers, I gain understanding about situations in my life, and I find peace. It is an amazing book that was written for our day.
