Why I am a Mormon

Why am I Mormon? Well, it's my choice. I did happen to be born into an LDS family, but I don't think I gained my own testimony until I was about 17 or 18. My wonderful parents always supported me in doing good things, and did their best to teach me right from wrong, but this is not why I came to know that the church is true. My Testimony of the church is based on the Book of Mormon. This book always fascinated me when I was a child, having many cool stories and heroes in it. As I got older and began to read the book for myself, I felt something stir inside of me. I felt refreshed after reading it. There is a challenge at the end of the Book of Mormon which states that if you ask God with faith, and a sincere heart, truly wanting to know if the Book and the Church is true, he will make it known by the power of the Holy Ghost. I didn't take this challenge seriously at first, but when I decided to truly give it a go, I got my answer. I know that the Book of Mormon is true, and I know that because I read it, and Prayed about it. It is the word of God. Because the Book of Mormon is true, Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God, and through him Jesus Christ restored his Church and the Authority to act in his name. Because of this, We have a prophet on the Earth today who is in direct communication with God.

How I live my faith

Recently I served a mission for the Church. While I did so, I did what I could to help others with whatever they needed, be it Spiritual, Physical, or Emotional sustenance. I did this with my own means, and under my own decision. I was not paid by the church to go. Now that I am home, I am trying my best to follow Christ. I try to study his words in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I try to follow the example he left for me, and work every day to become a better person.

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

John
A testimony to me, is just the things that we have very strong faith in. When we bear somebody that testimony, we are just telling people that we have come to know something for ourselves. We gain a testimony in many ways, whether it be through trial and error, or through prayer and fasting. For instance, I have a strong testimony of the Book of Mormon because I have read it, thought deeply in my heart about it, and prayed about it. I received an answer to my prayer about the book, and now I know it is true. Testimonies are not gained over night, but like school, we learn as we go. Show more Show less

What is the Law of Chastity?

John
The Law of Chastity is a law of Sexual Purity. In the Ten Commandments it states that we should not commit adultery, and Jesus explained that if we were to look upon someone to lust after them, then we have already committed adultery in our hearts. Basically put, we choose to abstain from any form of sexual relations outside of legal marriage between a man and a woman. The purpose for sex is to show commitment, and love to your spouse as well as to bring children into the world. Why would we want to do something that can so easily bring heartache, pain, and mistrust between a couple? Also with the Law of Chastity, we choose to avoid all forms of Pornography. We do this because it is demeaning to men and women, and horribly addictive. It removes that specialness that comes from saving yourself for the right person.  Show more Show less

Why do Mormons baptize their new members?

John
When Jesus was on the earth, he taught that baptism was essential for forgiveness of sins. He also taught that to do this ordinance properly, one needs to have the appropriate authority, given from God, to act in his name. Jesus himself traveled for 3 days to see John the Baptist because he had been given that authority. Without that authority, baptism is meaningless. Because Christ's church has been restored on the earth today through the Prophet Joesph Smith, authority was also restored to him to do these types of things. Since this is the case whenever a new member of the church is baptized by the proper authority, this act, combined with receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, allows us to be forgiven of our sins.   Show more Show less

How can we increase our faith in Jesus Christ?

John
Our faith is like a seed. Like a seed, when you plant a seed, you have to nourish it for it to take root. Even after it has taken root, it needs water and sunlight for it to keep growing. The same is with our faith. When we plant that seed of faith in our hearts, if we neglect that seed by thinking we have done enough or if we are not constantly striving improve ourselves, that seed of faith will shrivel up and die. There are three basic ways I have found of nourishing that seed in my life. First is to Pray. It's a very simple principal, but it's necessary. If we are not in communication with God, and inquiring what he would like us to do, we remove ourselves from his presence. The Second is Reading the Scriptures. We read the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon. They are both the word of God, and we can increase our faith by following their precepts. The third important thing is to go to church. In church we learn more of Christ's teachings and how to apply them to our daily lives. We can get close to people in our communities that have similar experiences, and grow together in our understanding of how to help one another. We learn in the Bible that faith without works is dead. We cannot gain more faith in Jesus Christ by just sitting there. Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

John
This is our unique message to the world. We have a living prophet on the earth today who talks directly to God. He gains revelation on how to best help the people here on the Earth. I know that there is a prophet on the Earth today because I asked God if that was true. I received an answer to that prayer in the affirmative, and you can too. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

John
The Word of Wisdom is a health code of sorts for the members of the church. We learn in the Bible that our bodies are a temple that the Holy Ghost resides in. If we are temples, then we must keep ourselves clean from the stains of the world. As part of the Word of Wisdom, there are five main substances that we abstain from. First, is Tobacco, in all forms. Second, we avoid all forms of Alcohol. Third and Forth, we choose not to drink Tea and Coffee. Fifth, we avoid Illicit Drugs. This is not all though. Since the purpose of the Word of Wisdom is to help us to be healthy, part of this law includes eating foods that are healthy, such as Fruits and Vegetables, not eating too much Meat, and watching our intake of Sweets and Fats. When we live this law, we are more capable of feeling the influence of the Holy Ghost in our life. If you were craving a cigarette, would you have much else on your mind at the time other than that? Probably not. When we have this distractions in our mind, we will not be able to recognize the influences of the Holy Ghost in our lives. Show more Show less
