Hi I'm Shirley

I've been a China Teacher and I am also a mother, a disaster relief worker for the Red Cross and a Mormon.

About Me

People have asked me why I don't write a book about my life. I thought maybe I would.....a comic book. Reality, "too true to be funny" books are in. Sketches in comic squares seem to fit. For instance, I am a 5th generation New York City islander. This has put a certain spin on my experience. People say New Yorkers are rude. But I am not. I even say, "Good Morning" to the checkout girl. While traveling in Salt Lake City, one pleasantly answered me back...and I went into shock!

Why I am a Mormon

Quality prayer, a deeper relationship with the Lord and the pursuit of excellence came together to satisfy my soul, in joining this church. Being radically high-minded and principled, got me nowhere-- until I harmonized my life with being a Mormon. I was baptized in the '60's. My life began again. My old ways were made new. I had found my calling, my mission, my life quest. Through the teachings of a brilliant university professor and the love of my sister missioaries, I was nurtured into stabilty. Still dripping flower children pedals, I soon married, had 5 children and, most precious of all, a testimony. I am a Mormon, because I want to live my best life!

How I live my faith

I live my faith with every breathe I take. For me, just being alive is a miracle and a blessing. My day begins with stretching (15 minutes-no big thing), dressing and scriptue reading. I find so much in the scriptures, that it has become like a tricky treasure hunt for me. I like thinking of eternity during the day when trivial matters impinge upon my life. Like my car is being inspected, and I'm told I need $500. brakes...I take a brief mental vacation and think of Heaven's calm brightness. Tuesdays I go to a special class about the Book of Mormon called Institute. This always challenges and quickens my thoughts. Nights I am doing health care and mornings I volunteer. It's true I get very little sleep. I'm a convert, so I have lots of catching up to do. Once a month, I get to visit other women in the church forming multiple, rewarding bonds. It's absolutely miraculous when we talk about spiritual impressions My children are grown up now, and I am a widow with a whole new vista of 'becoming ' in front of me.
