Hi I'm Van

I am the son of a music legend. I am a songwriter and Cambodian. And I am Mormon.

About Me

I'm a 28 year old Cambodian who was born in the United States. My family's culture differs strongly (as do other ethnic groups) with those around me. Somehow, I managed to fit in! I've grown up dissecting, analyzing, and creating music from the passion of my father who taught me how to play the drums. I'm extremely happily married to the most beautiful woman in the world, inside and out. And we are raising the most amazing little girl I've ever known who is now 2 going on 3! I currently work for BMW and I aspire to be a trainer for said company.

Why I am a Mormon

As my teen years were upon the horizon, my heart was often caught up in things that may not have been that "cool" or "awesome" with the rest of my friends and peers. On occasion, I would wonder and ponder on my purpose in life; what I could offer. My sister joined the Church in '98 through her husband who was a Mormon, and constantly asked me to attend a Sunday meeting with them. At this point in time, I had decided to not go to any churches because I had been to other religious sects and never really felt welcome. I hesitantly agreed to go to church with my sister and brother-in-law. Within 5 minutes of entering the Church building, I had more hugs and smiles (real smiles!) than I could count in a full year of my life! As I sat in the main room, the chapel, I noticed 4 young men, sharply dressed. My sister explained they were full-time missionaries; 18 to 21 year old young men putting aside 2 years of their personal lives and spending it by preaching the gospel 24/7. I was impressed! She also encouraged me to talk to them and if I had a question to feel free to ask! Wow! Upon meeting these young missionaries, I felt a pure sincerity and honesty from them. But most importantly, I felt their love for the Savior, which in turn felt love for me. My heart yearned and burned for this. I felt that peace when they testified of the restored gospel. I knew this was true. I was baptized in fall of 2000. I have never regretted it since.

How I live my faith

I serve as the music leader for children 5 to 11 years of age alongside with the leaders of Primary, as the organization is called. I conduct music and help the children learn more about the Savior and His love for them through the magic of singing and productive games that incorporate the song(s). There truly is a special feeling of the Spirit in Primary, even past the general hoopla of usual childhood behavior. Even the kids get quiet and recognize His presence when it's there! They're downright awesome!

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Van
Yes! With all my heart! Prophets were called by our Father in Heaven to receive instruction for the whole world. They were God's mouthpiece. In most cases, God spoke through these prophets to reveal His will to His children in order to try their faith. He had to see if they would believe his servants' words. The scriptures teach that God is the same yesterday, today and forever, so my question is "why can there NOT be a prophet on the earth today that speaks face to face with God?" Thomas S. Monson is called by our Father in Heaven to be the prophet, like Moses and Noah. The heavens are once again open unto us all! Show more Show less
