Hi I'm Neil

I'm a Mormon. I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and joined the church when I was 26 years old.

About Me

I am a convert to the church. After I joined the church, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia to begin my sports executive career with the Atlanta Braves. I met my wife, who is also a convert to the church, in our ward. We have two children and now reside in Florida. In my spare time I enjoy doing family history research, photography, and of course, sports.

Why I am a Mormon

Two key points of doctrine led me to investigate the church – that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, are separate and distinct beings (unlike the Trinity concept that I was taught in the Lutheran faith), and the fact that there is no paid clergy. When I was given a Book of Mormon, I read it cover to cover and put Moroni’s promise to the test. I prayed and received my witness through the power of the Holy Ghost that the Book of Mormon is true, and that Joseph Smith was a prophet who restored the gospel.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by supporting my family, accepting callings to serve in the church and by organizing an annual service project in the community.

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

The Mormon faith is a lay ministry; there is no paid ministry in the church. This is what attracted me to investigate the church. The money that individuals tithe to the church helps pay for buildings and their maintenance, lesson materials, and provide operating funds for local units in the church. These operating funds provide activities for youth and adults. Tithing is also used to help the missionary program and for educational purposes. Show more Show less

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

We regard the Holy Bible as scripture. It is God's word to the ancient Israelites and the New Testament contains the teachings of Jesus Christ during his mortal ministry. The Bible goes hand in hand with the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is an ancient history of the people that lived on this continent, highlighted by Christ's visit after his ascension. We study the Holy Bible in our Sunday School class for two years, one year each for the Old and New Testaments. We also study the Book of Mormon and church history for one year each. We live by the teachings and doctrine in the Holy Bible as well as in the Book of Mormon. Show more Show less
