Hi I'm Derek

I grew up in California and now work as an aerospace engineer in San Diego, CA. I'm a Mormon

About Me

My name is Derek and I'm an engineer. I went to school at BYU where I met my wife. We've been married for 10 years and we are the proud parents of 4 kids - 3 girls and a boy. I'm a bit of a sports nut, especially for BYU sports. I enjoy playing just about any sport out there and have recently taken up cycling. When I'm not on my bike or with the family, I can usually be found reading a good book (any recommendations?). My primary focus in life is my family. It's super busy with 4 little ones (especially for my wife!), but the joys that come from family make it all worth the effort.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in a Mormon household. My family has roots that go back to shortly after the church was established. However, as with most members of the church, there comes a time for those brought up in the church where a decision has to be made to continue in the faith of our fathers or find something else. I clearly remember the day when I decided that I needed to know for myself whether it was right for me to stay part of the church. I had always believed that what I had been taught was true, but I wanted to have some assurance that I was on the right path. I decided that it was important enough that if God wanted me to know, He would tell me. I knelt one night in a dorm room far from home and prayed. I prayed for a long time, longer than I ever had to that point in my life. I felt a peace come over me that was indescribable. It was not a self-manufactured delusion. It was the Spirit of the Lord confirming that God lives and knows me and loves me. I've since had many experiences that continue to confirm this witness I had many years ago of the love of the Lord and that this is the true church of Christ. Following the teachings of the scriptures and prophets leads me and my family to happiness. I know I'm on the right path.

How I live my faith

The focus of our faith is helping families return to live with God again. I have the chance to serve in our congregation in assisting families come closer to Christ. This responsibility includes visiting families in their home, instructing, encouraging, and inviting. We strive to help those we serve to keep the flame of faith in Christ burning brightly. In my own family we try to preserve a Christ-centered home. We attempt to filter out anything that would detract from having the Spirit of the Lord in our home. We want our home to be a safe haven from the world. We pray and read scriptures as a family daily and attend church meetings every week. We spend as much time as possible together. Teaching our children to have faith in Christ is our top priority.
