Hi I'm Derek

I'm 22 years old. I have four brothers and four sisters. I love playing guitar and writting music, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Arizona and lived there most of my life. I've also lived in Kentucky doing door to door sales. I also lived in Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana while serving a mission for my church. I love my mission and think about it everyday. I play guitar; I like a lot of music but metal is my favorite! For my job I am an ABA therapist for kids with autism, I love what I do. "My kids," (those i work with) teach me things all the time and they are tons of fun! They make me laugh all the time! I'm also going to school at the same time. I go to a community college, trying to figure out what I want to do long term.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in the church as a young child. My dad is a member of the church and my mom is not. Growing up I always just kind of believed the church was true because that is what I've always been taught. There came a time however, when it wasn't really a priority to me, when I couldn't really live off of what I had always been taught. At this time I struggled to go to church each Sunday I would go only when it was convenient for me or when I felt like it. Then one Sunday I went and I can't remember a lot of the details from that day but I had this overwhelming feeling that that is where I needed to be. That I was home. It was the first time in my life when I felt like I really "knew" the church was true not just "believed" it was true. Since then I’ve served a mission for my church which helped to deepen the Spirit that the gospel brings into my life. There I gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon as the word of God. I saw and felt the Atonement of Jesus Christ work in my life and in the lives of those I taught. This feeling can’t come from anywhere else but God. I know I’m on the path that he wants me to be on. I know that I am making the decisions that he wants me to. I know that Jesus lives and is the Son of God. I try my best to not sin against the great light and knowledge that I have received from the Lord.

How I live my faith

My Faith has a big influence on the decisions that I make. Although i live a normal life E.I. School, work, etc. I try to make sure i make Jesus Christ the center of my life. I make sure I read my scriptures everyday. I try to be kind to those that I meet. I think a great deal about how I can be an example to my friends and family and how I can help them. I know that i make a lot of mistakes but the Lord helps me to do the things he wants me to do. The Lord has changed my nature in many ways so that I do things i should naturally without even thinking about it. Then of course there are also things that take a great deal of energy for me to continue to do but i'm trying my best and like i said, God makes the difference so i can these things.

How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon stands as another testiment, another witness that Jesus is the Christ! The Son of God and the Savior of the world. The Book of Mormon like the Bible has the purpose of bringing Souls unto Christ, It is however a different book. The Bible was written in Jerusalem by Prophets over there, and the Book of Mormon was written in the Americas roughly around the same time the Bible was being written. by prophets that God called over here so that everyone could have his Gospel. it is a different book, different people, different stories, different places but it teaches the same Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith (a modern day prophet) was visited by the angel Moroni, who was the last prophet to write in the book and who also buried the plates in the ground so no wicked people could alter the book. This same Moroni of ancient times apeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and showed him where this record was buried. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and it is powerful evidence that Jesus Christ lives. Show more Show less
