Hi I'm Nolan

I'm a writer, I'm a cartoonist, I'm a missionary and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm 22 years old and I'm from a town of about 40,000 people in Arizona. I really enjoy stories, in any form so I like to read and watch movies a lot. I also have a pretty good talent for writing and drawing. I like to bike and go boating as well as just sit and soak up the sun. I've gone to college for two years and I'm currently serving a two year mission in northern Georgia.

Why I am a Mormon

My dad converted to the church shortly after he married my mom. I was born into the church. No one on my dad's side of the family is a member and in the rest of the family there are varying levels of church activity, but my parents have both been very strong in their faith. I learned for myself that the church was true while going through rough times growing up. There were times when God was the only one I really felt like I could talk to and the Book of Mormon and the Bible, as well as what I learned in Church on Sunday were what helped me really get to know and connect with Him. I like to try to back up my faith with proof a lot, but I'm still young and have a lot to learn and faith isn't something that can or should be proved all the time. The real way I know if something is truly from God is whether or not I feel the Holy Spirit. Explaining the feelings of the Spirit is kind of like explaining what the color blue is like. If you've never experienced it then you can't understand (like color to someone who was born blind), but if you have then you'll recognize it immediately. Some people don't even know what it is, they just think it's part of their instinct or gut reaction, but the Spirit is God's witness of truth. Personally, when the Spirit witnesses the truth to me I feel very happy, calm and at peace; but it's more than that. Things just feel "right" in a way that simple emotions don't really do justice to.

How I live my faith

The biggest way I'm currently living my faith is by serving a two year mission for the Church. I'm spending two years across the country in Georgia to teach people about the Gospel. My parents didn't pressure me and at first I didn't really want to go so I went to school for a while, but I finally realized this is where I need to be. It was a very personal decision. Going on a mission has definately been a growing experience for me. There are times when it has been difficult and it seems like everything in the world is trying to oppose us. There are also times when it's easy to get discouraged. On a mission, you step through the looking glass a little and see a lot of the problems that people have that you wouldn't in day to day life. Sometimes it seems like everything in the world is going wrong. But there's so much good that has been accomplished as well. Deep down, most people are basically good (some VERY deep down, heh heh). Helping people improve their lives, as well as helping them understand the value they have in God's eyes and the purpose of life, is far more rewarding than any type of material gain. Overall this has been a wonderful growing experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

The purpose of life is to be tested and to prove ourselves. During this life, we all make choices between good or evil, between following God and following the Devil. We also go through trials and hard times but by overcoming trials and choosing to do good, we grow and draw closer to God. Through Jesus Christ we can change for the better and overcome past mistakes. It is only by doing this that we can live with God again. Show more Show less

How can we stop the spread and influence of pornography?

Just take a stand! This is probably the BIGGEST problem in modern society in terms of how widespread it is because most people either support it or wont acknowledge that it's a problem. Pornography is addictive and destructive. It is a leading cause of depression and sexual abuse. Paying for it is supporting prostitution, however much people may like to split hairs on the issue. Don't participate in it. Speak out against it. If you have kids, warn them while they're young, before it becomes a problem, just like drugs and alcohol. Show more Show less

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

The Bible is the word of God but people have lots of different interpretations of what it teaches. There are many different churches that all use the Bible but teach different things about who God is, how he wants us to worship him and what his purpose for us is. Some religious teachers will "spin" biblical teachings to fit with changing times. People falling away from the truth, even when they have scriptures, is nothing new. It even happened prior to Jesus's time which is why the Pharisees wouldn't listen to him. This is why the true church of Jesus Christ needs to be led by God and not by men. By calling a modern day prophet and giving him power and authority, God continues to lead his church today. This is done so that people will not be confused or led astray by false teachings.
