Hi I'm Rustin

I'm a husband, father, and Industrial Hygienist. I'm from rural Arizona. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

At our house I mostly go by Dad. I've been married to my lovely wife for over 6 years. Our little boy will be starting kindergarten soon, and we've also been blessed with a beautiful little girl (3). She gets a lot of attention because I come from a family of five boys. Our basketball team is rounded out with our 9-month old baby boy =) Beyond family and church, most of the rest of my time is spent at work. I earned a BS from BYU in Public Health and recently graduated with my Masters of Public Health from the University of Arizona. I work for UA full-time on a project comparing the health effects of diesel and biodiesel emissions in underground mining. I will begin a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences in Fall 2014 and mostly hope my future career will allow me to provide well for my family and help prevent injury and illness in the workplace. I served a mission in southern Brazil, and really loved the people! It was an experience that changed my life. Although I don't have much time for it any more, I really enjoy spending time outdoors. The mountains here are amazing, and offer a nice retreat from city life. I love to fish, hike, and camp, among other things. One of those things happens to be board and outdoor game design - maybe I'm still a kid at heart. And I'm always trying to get back into shape . . .

Why I am a Mormon

The short answer is I'm a Mormon because it's what God wants me to be, and I know that because I asked Him. While a teenager I was trying to figure a lot of things out - teenager isn't! I had been raised as a Mormon by good parents, but I didn't yet know for myself if the Church was true, or if continuing in it was right for me. I knew about the promise that The Book of Mormon contains in Moroni 10:4-5 (page 529), and figured that if it worked for so many others it could work for me too. I began reading The Book of Mormon from front to back, all the while praying to God and asking to know if it was true. I had read through much of the book before I got my answer. When it came, I was simply reading the book as I had each night. It felt like a small fire was burning in my chest - I wasn't hot, but felt warm. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I like God's Spirit was communicating directly with my soul, and I understood in my mind and heart, "This book is true. This is true." Since then I've received many other witnesses from the Holy Ghost that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is indeed Christ's church on Earth. I know Jesus Christ lives and loves each of us. I know that He restored His Church through the Prophet Joseph Smith, and that The Book of Mormon is His word to the peoples of the ancient Americas. I know that it is only through this restored gospel, that we can find true happiness in this life, and enduring joy in the life to come.

How I live my faith

The short answer is as Paul teaches, pure religion is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. -James 1 verse 27- I still have lot to work on if I'm going to fully live this scripture, but I guess the most important way I live my faith is doing my best to be positive around and bring happiness to others. Thinking about Christ helps me to do the right thing more often than I would without Him. He helps me remember to open the door for others or greet them with a smile. There are plenty of opportunities to serve others in the Church, and when I serve with a cheerful heart, it helps everyone to be happier - including myself. We have the opportunity to visit with other members of the Church in their homes to see how they are doing and if there's any way we can help them. I've been privileged to work with the missionaries of the Church. Sometimes I even get to join them in their work and their visits to those interested in learning more about the gospel. I was blessed enough to serve as a missionary in Brazil, and love to see the light that the missionaries bring to others.

Can husband and wife be together forever? Do you believe that families will live together in heaven?

Rustin
To both questions I answer absolutely yes! Within our families we experience our deepest sorrows and our ultimate joys. The family unit is meant to help us learn to be more like God it is meant to last forever. I don't just believe these things, but I know them! And I am very grateful to know that God gave His only Son so that we may all live again - and reunite with our loved ones forever. For this reason, the family is vital for us to gain all the benefits of God's great plan of happiness. Show more Show less

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Rustin
It is in the family unit of a father, mother, and children that we will find the greatest happiness possible. God yearns for His children - all of us - to live righteously so that we can return to Him and be reunited with His family and ours. For this to happen, it is important that a man and woman are properly married so they can bear children and learn to be good parents - just like our Heavenly Parents. It is for this reason that He so greatly mourns any sin that destroys families. We learn from the teachings of Jesus Christ that fornication and adultery are grave sins. Lusting, pornography, fornication, and adultery often tear families apart - this is why God looks down so much on these sins. Those with attractions to members of the Opposite sex are commanded to control their thoughts, their words, and their deeds. Any who entertain or carry out temptations to commit sexual sins have crossed the line. So it is with those who are attracted to the Same sex - if one with homosexual attraction controls their thoughts, words, and deeds, they have not sinned but are choosing the right as they fight temptation. I know that Christ can help anyone overcome unrighteous desires, whatever they may be. Regardless of sexual orientation, we are all God's children. Marriage is ordained of God, and meant to be between a man and woman. We feel so strongly about 'traditional' families, and procreation is the way it is, because families will lead us to the greatest joy possible. Show more Show less
