Hi I'm Dave

I am a father of four, an eye surgeon, and I love the mountains. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have four adorable children and am married to their mother--the love of my life. I am a physician and eye surgeon. I enjoy climbing, skiing, triathlons and camping with the family. I work hard and play hard, but mostly try to keep life simple.

Why I am a Mormon

A Book of Mormon prophet urged his followers saying, "I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God" (Mosiah 2: 41). Having been born a Mormon, I contemplated in my youth whether I wanted to be a Mormon. I am a Mormon, because of the "blessed and happy state" that I experience as I strive to live the commandments my God, my church and my family expect me to live.

How I live my faith

My two year-old son said it best in an honest, heartfelt prayer, "I am trying to be like Jesus, but I can't, I try and I try, but it's just sooooo hard." God expects us to seek Christ-like attributes--in this life to become more like God. In that daily effort, there is daily failure. In a lifetime, there is progress and refinement. The change of our natures comes through God's grace, but this is not an effortless engagement. Living my faith involves daily scripture study and prayer. It includes teaching my children. When asked to serve in the church, living my faith is accepting the call and doing my best to serve as God would have me serve.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Dave
I have always been amazed by the rumors which circulate about what I believe. I've never prayed to Joseph Smith and never will. I have never been taught to worship Joseph Smith. I worship God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. At church we study the life and teachings of all the prophets of the Old and New testament, the Book of Mormon, and latter-day prophets. Joseph is one of these prophets. There are a couple of songs that I can recall from our hymnal that sing praise to the life of the prophet Joseph--I would not consider this worship. Like Joseph of the Old Testament, Joseph Smith is one of my favorite prophets. I admire how these two were willing to sacrifice everything to be true to God and had uncompromising integrity of heart. As I think of the sacrifice Joseph Smith paid for the work God asked him to do, ultimately having been murdered by a vicious mob, I with admiration sing the words, "praise to the man who communed with Jehovah." With similar reverence and admiration I would sing the praises of all such men and women who despite being faced with death, reaffirmed their faith in the Savior of mankind. Show more Show less
