Hi I'm Debi Heyn

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mom, a mother in law, a BSA volunteer of 26 years who was recently awarded the Silver Beaver Award, a lifetime member of Girl Scouts. I am a lunch lady at a local high school. For the last seven years I have actually been Santa's boss at Christmas time at a local mall and also the Easter Bunnies boss at Easter. I love the out of doors and would rather cut my grass and work in my garden then clean my house! I don't do windows or floors! I am enjoying bike riding more in my life right now because it is easier on the knees! I was recently released with my husband after working for four years with single adults 18-30 years old and love them all.  The most important thing to me is my family and I miss them when we are not together. I am grateful for the strong family bonds we have and can not imagine anything worse than not being able to be together with them forever.

Why I am a Mormon

My mom was a Mormon, my dad was not. I was taken to church and discovered a peacefulness there from a young age. When it came to my 8th birthday I was very happy to be baptized a Mormon. I have grown up just like everyone else has going through some tough times. My dad was in the military and I know it was my faith in God, going to church, and church members that helped me through tough times. I did the fun things teenagers do and was grateful I had been taught that there was a loving Father in Heaven who loved me and knows me and expected me to be an example to others. To keep myself spotless from the world and to be able to live the commandments as best as I could. There is a real love and warmth knowing He cares and knows me so why would I not want to do what I have been asked to do by Him.

How I live my faith

I know that there are times when people question who they are and what all this world stuff is about. Even I have and I am grateful I have more answers than most people. I share that with those around me when I can. I love being a neighbor who helps out and can be counted on to be called upon in an emergency if needed. I work as a head election judge for our city in elections and love it. I enjoy planting flower beds each year for the city to help beautify our streets. I love helping Boy Scouts achieve Eagle rank and am currently our districts Advancement chairman. I have organized and headed up three senior all night parties at the local high schools. I enjoy the energy of youth and appreciate that there are many who are so concerned about doing the right thing and giving our community and nation a good future. I love to visit the other women at church and serve them by taking meals to them or just being there to talk or help. I get to pick out the music for church to be sung each week which I believe really sets the mood of our meetings and I treasure that dearly. I guess, in the looking at it all, I am doing what my mom taught me and what her mom taught her and what my Heavenly Father has asked us all to do....love one another.

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Debi Heyn
The Book of Mormon was actually written by ancient prophets on tablets and then hidden for many years. Years later, a young 14 year old boy prayed about what church to join and in his journey he was told to go to a hill where he would obtain these sacred records and it was his calling to translate them....not write them.....so that they could be understood by us all. I look at the boys at church who are that age and wonder at the faith Joseph Smith had in order to do this. Because of his incredible upbringing in a family that was close to God and read scriptures and studied them together he was prepared to accept what he went through and what the Lord asked him to do. Do Mormons only help Mormons?

Debi Heyn
I think this is probably a huge mistake people make about Mormons. You should all know that usually when there is a natural disaster anywhere in the world, the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints is one of the first ones to respond with humanitarian needs and help. They are also there to help with clean ups after storms, look for the yellow shirts that say "helping hands". My son served as a missionary in the Texas Houston Mission and arrived a few weeks before the hurricane Ike arrived. He spent many hours helping everyone who needed it and grew to love the people he helped. When he sent pics he was in his Yellow Helping Hands t-shirt with other members of the church helping clean up. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Debi Heyn
We do not worship Joseph Smith....we hold him in reverence as any prophet should be held. He is not our God, he was a prophet of God. He was like Adam, Moses, Noah and many other prophets leading their people to God and teaching them. Show more Show less
