Hi I'm James Stringam

I'm a soldier, a missionary, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm currently serving a mission in the Nicaraugua, Managua North mission. I love the Gospel, and I love my Savior, Jesus Christ. I've served in the Army Reserve since 2009. I joined while I was in high school. It's been a challenge sometimes to balance school, work, and my military obligations, but I've embraced these challenges and am grateful for the strength the Lord has given me to overcome weaknesses. Army training was really difficult. It wasn't the pushups or the 3:30am wake up calls that did it for me, it was the morality. Every sentence that came out of a Drill Sergeant's mouth was carefully garnished with profanity. Discussions would take place in the barracks that I never would have imagined hearing outside of a strip club or "adult video" store. In the second phase of my training where personal electronic devices were authorized, my roomates would watch pronography on their laptops without even the courtesy of using headphones. Keeping my standards in environments like these is not easy. But the one thing that always keeps me strong is knowing who I am - a son of a Heavenly Father. Because I love Him, I want to keep His commandments and serve Him. I want to respect women as daughters of God, and treat them as such. I want to keep myself clean. I'm grateful for these simple truths that guide me towards virtue, happiness, and light - and away from darkness, vice, and sadness.

Why I am a Mormon

Our lives are filled with hardships and stuggles. These can be discouraging, but I know from my own experience that the knowledge I have that I am a child of God and that I have a loving Heavenly Father helps me to see the "big picture." I know that God allows us to work through trials and hardships so that we can grow. I know that we are never alone. I know that God knows my name. The most precious truth I've come to understand through the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is that because of the sacrifice Jesus made for me on the Cross and in the Garden of Gethsemane, I can be forgiven of my sins and be sanctified through the Holy Spirit. I can have a change of heart, I can have the desire to sin taken from me and be born again in Christ. I've experienced this in my life. I know the bitterness of sin and the feelings of inadequacy, worthlessness, and pain that it brings. I also know the sweetness of forgiveness - the moment when you finally understand that God forgives you of your sins, and that you are acceptable before Him. Nothing can compare to this knowledge, and the feelings of peace and comfort that it brings. I would give up anything if it meant that I could feel this way always. Serving as a missionary is an incredible experience. Every day, I pray to be filled with Charity - the pure love of Christ. I see His childen in a new way. My life is full of love and joy. I know that if the people I teach desire to feel the way I feel, and if they follow the example of Christ by being baptized and becoming one of His disciples - they too will experience the joy I have and desire so strongly to share with others.

How I live my faith

I dedicate hours every day to studying the word of God and sincere prayer. Then I spend my days meeting and teaching God's children in Nicaragua. I hope to bring myself closer to Christ so that I can invite and encourage others to do the same, and to experience the same happiness that I have as I've walked along the path of discipleship.
