Hi I'm Natalie

I quit my job to be a stay-home mom. I love the outdoors, but definitely don't like to cook, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I used to work as a career systems specialist full-time, but wanted to focus more on my family so now I am a stay-home mom and love it, most of the time. Being a stay-home mom is a lot different than working full-time. I get to gage my successes how many loads of laundry I did, how many walls got painted, and how happy my kids are instead of how many presentations I did or how many technical crises I solved. I am renovating an older home so I learn new skills every day. One day I might knock out a shower, the next day paint walls. I am not a cook. My theory is that sandwiches have as much nutrition as a seven course meal, so why take the time. My husband gave me a 15-minute gourmet cookbook so when I was a stay-home mom, I would cook some great meals. I have used it twice. I would do anything to be outdoors. My favorite two things to do are shovel snow and mow the lawn, but a bike ride with my two children is a close third. I love to travel. An early experience as an exchange student in Finland gave me the travel bug and it has never left. Favorite places to travel this far have been Washington, D.C., Freiburg, Germany, and Palmyra, New York.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I am a happy, positive person who hopes for great things. I believe that through Jesus Christ, I can overcome my weakness and return to Him. In today's crazy world, that hope for something better helps me keep my bearings.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by serving other people. It starts at home. I quit a great job as a career systems analyst so I could focus more on my family. I serve with the women's organization at church. We focus on serving not just people in our church, but in the community and the world. Our women's group is currently making quilts to send to needy people all over the world. I took a friend to one of our quilt work days and she and I completed a quilt in just a few hours. I also help gather food for a children's backpack project. Many people at church help by donating food. The food goes into 140 different backpacks that are then sent home with kids over the weekend so they have something to eat. I try to follow Christ's example and look for ways to help others.

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Natalie
The Book of Mormon is a great book written by prophet/historians living on the American continent. It takes place over a 1000 year time period from 600 b.c to 400 a.d. Show more Show less

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Natalie
Not all Mormons are required to serve a mission, but it is the best way I can think of to show God that you are willing to sacrifice everything for him for a short time in your life. Not many people get to spend all day, everyday sharing the love Jesus Christ has for us, but missionaries do. Show more Show less

What is being a Mormon like?

Natalie
Being a member of the Mormon church is great. You have ready-made friends where ever you go. We just moved and before my children even started school, they met kids their age at church. This made the first day of school much less difficult, especially for a middle schooler. Another reason I enjoy being a member of the church so much is that I have a solid foundation on which I rely to raise my children. When questions come up about modest clothing or appropriate music and movies, it is easy to help my kids find answers. We just find out what the prophets have said on the matter.   Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Natalie
I always ask myself, why would God give people in other times prophets and not in our time? That doesn't make any sense. I know that God has given us a prophets today to lead us. The world is so crazy and mixed up, that we need that direct guidance through the prophet more now than ever people did before. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Natalie
Mormons are not a whole lot different than others in that I love my family and want to have a great relationship with them. I also want to make my community and country great places to live so I get involved in politics and community groups. I like to work hard and believe that any work, if honest, is good work. I also like to play hard. My "play" tends to be a bit different from some of my other friends. Instead of hanging out at the bar after work, I spend time with my family doing hobbies and recreation. I also notice a difference in how I dress. I like to dress up, but it is always modest- no shoulders, no short-shorts is my motto- once you get to my age, its a great motto to follow regardless. In my leisure time I visit other people in the church to see what I can do to help them. I also spend some of my extra time attending our temples. I put a huge emphasis on education for myself and my family. Because learning will not stop at death, I think the more I learn now, the further ahead I will be later. I also love to invite friends over for dinner parties. These usually involve my husband cooking something really good to eat and then playing either wii games or board games.   Show more Show less

Do Mormons only help Mormons?

Natalie
Mormons help everyone. I am involved in some different projects that help people who are not in the Mormon church. My women's group at church recently made some blankets to donate to an over seas project. I also volunteer with others in my Mormon congregation to help with a backpack program where we supply food to kids for the weekend. My church women's group has also put together hygiene kits for the local women's shelter. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Natalie
Mormons don't worship Joseph Smith. We do understand that he was a great prophet who did much to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ in this time period, just as other prophets before him have done. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

Natalie
The purpose of life is easy. We have to get a body and then go through different challenges to learn and grow. It is going through those challenges,or trials, and keeping a positive attitude that is the test. While the end goal of returning to my Heavenly Father is important, I must remember that it is what I learn right here and now that will determine if I reach that goal. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Natalie
The Book of Mormon tells of the people who lived in America thousands of years ago. The Book of Mormon helps me understand more fully why God loves ALL his children. We know of his love for His children who lived in Israel and the surrounding area, but there are so many more people on the earth. The Book of Mormon shows that Christ visited the people in the Americas and healed their sick, performed miracles, and organized His church there as well. Show more Show less

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Natalie
My testimony is simply what I know. Quite often it changes, not that I don't know something I knew before. Rather, I know and understand more about something I already knew. That is the great thing about the gospel. God helps you know and understand what you are capable of and willing to know. He never forces you to know something. Show more Show less

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Natalie
I love to read the Bible. I have learned so much from the life of our Saviour, from reading the New Testament. I also love to read the prophecies about Jesus and His church from prophets in the Old Testament such as Isaiah. Right now I am reading the Old Testament. I think Leviticus is the hardest book to understand thus far. It is interesting to see how many specifics the Children of Israel followed in their sacrifices.   Show more Show less

Who was Joseph Smith?

Natalie
Just like Moses, or Abraham, God has prophets to direct his people and Joseph Smith was the first prophet in this time period. Like many prophets before, Joseph Smith received revelation from God and directed His children. Just like other prophets, he called the people to repentance. Just like prophets before he gave us the word of God through scripture. One of these scriptures is the Book of Mormon which he translated. Just like many other prophets, he died rather than go against what he believed. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Natalie
The Word of Wisdom is the Lord's law of health. It tells what we should eat and drink to keep our bodies and minds healthy. It also tells us what to avoid to remain healthy. It is a commandment, similar to the health laws God gave his children in the Old Testament. The neat thing about the Word of Wisdom is that God gives us promises directly related our obedience of the law. It makes it easy to follow knowing that if I keep God's health law, I will be blessed. What do Mormons believe happens to us after we die? What do Mormons believe about life after death?

Natalie
Death is not the end, just the beginning. We get to associate with the same people we associated with on earth. That is why family and friendships are so important to me. We also get to continue in our progression to better ourselves. This is very important to me because I want to constantly be learning and it is not going to stop at death. Most important though is that we will meet our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Wow, that is something to look forward to. Show more Show less
