Hi I'm Martin Briggs

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm married to the most wonderful girl in the world, and we have the cutest little 1-year-old boy. It's crazy how much your life changes when you add a child into the mix. Though it's tough at times, we wouldn't trade being parents for anything. I served a full-time LDS mission in Argentina, where I learned to love Spanish and the people I met. I love hanging out with my wife and son, having game nights with our friends, running, mountain biking, and playing basketball with the guys. My wife and I also enjoy going new places, and we've lived in Mexico and Colombia. I come from a big family--I'm number three out of eight kids, two of which are my stepbrothers, but I consider them my brothers. When I was in middle school, I didn't like telling people how big my family was, since I didn't think it was cool. Ha, ha. Now I LOVE being from a such a big family. My siblings and I are always laughing whenever we get together.

Why I am a Mormon

Though my parents were members of the Church when I was born, I now know for myself that what they taught me is true. I was about 15 years old when I personally read the Book of Mormon for myself. As Moroni, the last prophet included in the Book of Mormon, invites all who would later read the book to do, I knelt down in my room to ask Heavenly Father if the Book of Mormon was true. I then felt a calm reassurance that it was true. As Moroni had promised, the Lord let me know, through the feelings that come through the Holy Ghost, that the Book of Mormon was true. I can now be sure that, because the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith truly was called of God and given power to translate the book. I know that through the Prophet Joseph, God has brought back the Church His Son, Jesus Christ, had established when He walked the Earth many years ago. I know that God still speaks to us today through prophets, both those found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon and other scripture, as well as through living prophets, who also hold the same priesthood that Christ gave to His Apostles in the New Testament. I am a Mormon because I know that the only way to be truly happy and successful in life is by living as much like Christ as I can. Today He guides us to let us know how we must live, through His prophets and apostles in His Church today, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's not like being a member of this Church means I'm automatically saved, but I do know that this is the way Heavenly Father will bring us back to Him and help us be happy in this life.

How I live my faith

I love people. My wife and I thrive on being with friends, meeting new people, and spending time with our family. I currently serve as a leader in our local church's men's organization, the elders quorum. It's a non-paid assignment (or 'calling'), just like all other local leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but it's super fulfilling. The other leaders and I focus mainly on making sure all the men in our group, as well as their families, have all their spiritual and temporal needs met. This includes visiting our members in their homes and encouraging the men in our group to visit and serve their neighbors, as well. I also attend Church meetings each Sunday with my wife, and at least once per month, as part of my assignment as a home teacher, I like to go with a friend to visit a couple of the families in our church community. We share a short message from the prophets of the church, and check to see if the family needs anything. It's fun to get to know people better through this simple service. My wife and I study the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other scriptures every day. I know the Lord speaks to us and teaches us what we need to do through the words of His prophets. In the end, however, I think I best live my faith just by my daily life. I'm an elementary teacher, and I love helping kids learn. I also love just being a good friend to my coworkers and administrators, friends, and neighbors. I believe we're all brothers and sisters here on this Earth, each of us a child of Heavenly Parents, who love us and know us perfectly. So, I try to treat others as such, and I think that's what it's all about.
