Hi I'm Jim

I am a Civil Engineer, a University Professor, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and I love my work. It is amazing to work and associate with so many promising young men and women while directing research in water resources I find challenging and fulfilling. I love my work, but not half as much as my family and spending time with them. I have four beautiful children, a daughter and three boys. It is not easy to be a parent and try to teach and guide the people you love most to do good, but it is worth it. I just hope some day they will look back and think I have done a good job.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because in a world full of chaos and voices shouting from every direction come here or come there I feel a clear message of truth and peace in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I feel peace and confidence in my life as I live and serve through the church.

How I live my faith

I am active in the church and currently serve as a bishop in a ward with more than 100 families and 350 members. It is an awesome, wonderful experience to be able to witness firsthand the love God has for each of His children. I often work with people who face extreme challenges and trials of faith in their life. I have thought at times, "I wish I could take that a way," and yet I have come to realize that it is through these challenges that we truly come to know God, to choose Him, and to develop strength of faith.

How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible, another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is the same as the Bible in that it contains scripture from ancient prophets. It is different in that it is the history of the people of God in ancient America (MesoAmerica) instead of the people of ancient Israel. As God restored the fullness of the gospel in these last days he revealed through an angel to Joseph Smith where the golden plates had been hidden. He translated the plates through the power of God, and it differs from the Bible that it has not gone through so many edits and translations. Together they more fully testify that Chris lived, died, was resurrected, and through him we are entitled to the same blessings and the opportunity to be cleansed of our sins and receive eternal life.
