Hi I'm Charla

I'm a Spanish teacher, a singer/songwriter, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love teaching, and I'm passionate about foreign languages. Going into my second year of teaching Spanish, I have learned that each day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. In addition to teaching I also love to sing, write music on the guitar and perform. It's therapeutic for me to express myself through music and to share my love of music with others. When I'm not teaching or singing, I'm usually playing soccer, dancing, running a race or doing something active and fun. I love being outdoors, and I'm always game for a good challenge.

Why I am a Mormon

I think most people at some point in their life will ask the question, "Why am I here?" We want to know if there really is a purpose to this life, this dance that we do everyday. One reason why I am a Mormon is because through prophets of God, we have been given the answer to this important question. We are taught by the prophets that we lived in heaven with God as spirits before coming to this earth. He loves us so much that he gave us the opportunity to come to earth to gain a physical body and to learn and be tested. He knew that the experiences we would gain on earth would help us to become like him. Our purpose in this life is to prepare to return to live with Heavenly Father again. We do this by living the commandments he has given us through the prophets he has called to guide us. I know that as we live the commandments the Lord blesses our lives immensely. He has promised us that as we make sacrifices to be good, to serve His children and to live righteous lives, we will be able to return to live with Him again after this life is over. We are also promised that we will be able to live together as eternal families with the potential to continue to learn and grow for eternity. Knowing that I can live with my earthly family for eternity helps me to feel more love for them during this life. It increases my desire to develop and nourish healthy relationships now because I know they will potentially be carried into the eternities. I can't imagine being without them.

How I live my faith

It's all about love. The Savior, Jesus Christ, set the perfect example of love during His earthly ministry in the way He interacted with others. He was kind, thoughtful and concerned for their happiness. When I begin and end each day with prayer, I often consider how well I am following the example of the Savior. I ask myself questions such as, "Was I kind? Was I thoughtful? Is there someone that I need to treat better? Is there someone I can serve or help?" As I pray, I frequently am inspired to change something that I am doing in order to show more love to the people in my life. Daily prayer has not only increased the love I feel for others, but it has increased the amount of love I feel from my Heavenly Father, likely because I am more aware of it. I feel joy, and I feel peace, the peace that comes from knowing that there is a supreme being who is caring after me from day to day, someone who knows me, who loves me despite my faults, someone who listens.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. The Book of Mormon was written by prophets of God who lived in the Americas before, during, and after the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. It contains a record of Christ's visit to the America's after His Resurrection. In John 10:16 Jesus tells His apostles, " And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." During Christ's visit to the Americas he says to them, "And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd" (3 Nephi 15:21, Book Of Mormon). As I have read the Book of Mormon, I have felt that the book is true, that it is indeed another testament of Jesus Christ. As Latter Day Saints, we read the Book of Mormon alongside the Bible. I know that anyone who will read the Book of Mormon, ponder on its message, and pray with real intent to know if the book is true, they will receive an answer from God. Because I have personally done this, I know without a doubt that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. As I continue to read from its pages, I am filled with joy, peace and hope, and I am given strength to continue living the Gospel of Jesus Christ as I learn from the example of the prophets who lived in the Americas many years ago. The Book of Mormon can provide us with many answers to the most important questions of life such as, "Where did we come from? Why are we here on earth? What is the purpose of this life? and Where do we go after we die?" If you've ever had any of these questions, I encourage you to read the Book of Mormon and to pray about its message.
