Hi I'm Matt

I am a husband, father and a grandfather. I'm a song writer. I'm a brain cancer survivor. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a fortunate man. My beautiful, loving wife, five children and their spouses and 16 grandchildren bless my life with peace and happiness. I love to serve others in my family or at work as a musician and a marketing professional.. I love looking at oil and water color paintings and reading fantasy novels and non-fiction books about marketing and business. I am also a guitarist and singer songwriter. My friend Adam and I were asked by the great, great grand nephew and grandson of Levi Hancock to write melodies for some of his songs. The lyrics to his songs are recorded in family journals. A while ago we discovered that I had a large tumor growing on my brain. A skilled surgeon removed it and a knowledgeable oncologist programmed and guided the radiation therapy. Not long after that we discovered a tumor in my pancreas as well. Through faith in God and the help of a talented surgeon and her staff I have been restored to good health.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was seventeen I wanted to know for myself what my parents believed about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I spent time alone reading and pondering the scriptures and praying. I even fasted a number of times on my own. I did my best to keep the commandments, make good choices and sought for a relationship with my Heavenly Father. Through my small efforts the Lord gave me the gift of a testimony through a marvelous experience on a Saturday evening in May of 1970. This gift of testimony came when I remained true despite a difficulty that I was having. The experience of that night has never left me throughout the rest of my life and subsequent similar experiences have added to my testimony of faith. It has sustained me through good and bad times. I have learned that the Lord loves his children including me and that I can always turn to the Savior for help. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is Christ's true church restored to the earth many years after a dark period of apostasy. I know that there are living prophets and apostles on the earth today and they lead and direct the Church of Jesus Christ under the direction of Jesus Christ himself through revelation. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ recorded by his "other sheep" in the ancient Americas. It is true. I love my Savior, Jesus and I testify that he lives.

How I live my faith

Maureen, my wife and I have wanted to serve together as missionaries. Last week our wish came true. We received a mission call to serve for 12 months. We are very excited. A few years ago I served as a Bishop (pastor) of a married student congregation. I was fortunate to be assisted by several capable young counselors and other leaders in the congregation, to whom I delegated much of the responsibilities. My wife attended the Sunday meetings and social activities with me. We grew to love the wonderful young married couples of our congregation. I received direction from the Lord in marvelous ways as I presided in worship services, counseled with and served the members of our congregation. When my time as a Bishop was completed, my wife and I returned to our home congregation and were pleased when we received a new calling teaching Sunday gospel lessons to seven year old children at church. I have served in many other callings through the years, such as Scout Master, Sunday School Teacher, and counselor to a Bishop. A Bishop has two men who assist him, called counselors. In addition to my other responsibilities, I am also a Home Teacher. This is a calling where the men of the Mormon congregation are assigned two or three families to visit, befriend and help with any emergencies or needs they might have. I enjoy this opportunity to serve and the friendships that are developed in this calling.
