Hi I'm Gideon
I'm a punk. I'm a nerd. I'm a convert.
My name is Gideon. I'm a convert to the Church. I joined when I was 18, in 2008. I'm currently serving my mission in the Montana Billings Mission. I love movies, music, comic books, reading, and soccer. There are too many movies to pick a favorite. My favorite music was mostly punk and ska, but others as well, my favorite band is Streetlight Manifesto. My favorite comic book authors include Brian K. Vaughan, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, and Garth Ennis. My favorite authors include H.G. Wells, Ray Bradbury, Chuck Palahniuk, and Cormac McCarthy. My favorite soccer teams are the Colorado Rapids and Chelsea FC. My life (before my mission, of course) consisted of listening to music, watching/going to soccer games, and going to concerts. Music is pretty much my life!
Before I joined the church, I was atheist. It was just easier that way. But, through the efforts of good friends, and a girlfriend (yep, I'm one of those), I saw the truth of what the missionaries were saying, and felt the Spirit. I was the last person anyone expected to join (everyone told me that, member and non-member friends), but not even me, as stubborn and anti-religious as I was, could deny the feeling I felt when the missionaries were teaching me. There are lots of things and interests that I had that weren't in harmony with teachings of the Church, which has been kind of hard, and makes it all the more confusing why I joined, but they've been things I've given up because I know this Church is true, and that the men that tell us these things and lay down these commandments and guidelines are inspired men, so I'm willing to follow them... even if it's not always what I want.
At first, I just went to church. I was quiet, and didn't talk to anyone. They all had been friends for a long time, and were so comfortable. I was "the new guy". Eventually, I branched out and got more involved. I was called to be a ward missionary, and really enjoyed that. I live my faith by constantly being an example to others around me. If I'm hanging out with friends and they want to drink, I simply tell them "no" and am happy to explain why if they ask me. I live my faith now by wearing a white shirt, tie, and name-tag 24/7 for 2 years as I serve a mission.
