Hi I'm Nigel

I live in England and I've been a primary school teacher for almost 30 years. I've been a Mormon all my life.

About Me

I live in Colchester, England and attend Colchester ward in the Ipswich, England stake. I have lived a great many years and really enjoy life (just as well). I am married to Patricia (Tricia) and we have 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls) who are all adults and although our eldest two (Matthew and Sara-Louise) are married and our third, Emma, lives away from home we have managed to hang on to our youngest, Ben. Sara has 3 children (all boys) with a fourth (also a boy) expected in the next 3/4 weeks, and our son Matthew has 1 daughter and 1 son. I work as a Primary school teacher and specialise in Physical Education. I enjoy being with my family, gardening, watching football and cricket-well I am English, writing and water colour painting.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) when I was about 3 years old so I was brought up with the teachings of the church As I grew up I gradually gained a testimony that the church was the only true church on the Earth, and my testimony was strengthened when in 1969 I served a mission for the church. During that 2 year period I had a daily opportunity to study the gospel in some detail and I became closer to my Heavenly Father through much prayer, fasting and study. Since my mission I have continued to live the principles of the gospel and it has brought me great happiness because it has helped me to know that I am a child of God and to understand that life has a purpose and meaning.

How I live my faith

The Gospel is a way of life really and it affects all that I do. The teachings of the church encourage us to endeavour to live our lives as the Saviour Jesus Christ showed us. Therefore when decisions have to be made I try to think what Jesus would do. It doesn't always happen but when I do this I feel that I can make better decisions. I don't drink alcohol, smoke, drink tea or coffee or take recreational drugs, and living a clean life has helped me to be physically fit and well throughout my life. I attend church meetings weekly and this helps me to renew my baptismal covenants, to strengthen my testimony of the Gospel and is an opportunity to learn and to be reminded of Gospel principles. I strongly believe in the power of prayer in my life and know that Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers.

Who was Joseph Smith?

Joseph Smith was the first Prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a teenager growing up in New York state he was confused about which church to join. He couldn't understand why there were so many Christian denominations who all had slightly different beliefs, but who all declared that their church was the true church. One day when Joseph Smith was reading the Bible he came across James chapter 1 verse 5 which explains 'If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.' Joseph decided to put this to the test and therefore to pray and ask God which church he should join. He went to a nearby grove of trees and prayed. Briefly, in answer to his prayer he was visited by God and Jesus Christ who told Joseph to join none of the churches as although they all had some of the truth the church of Jesus Christ was not to be found on the Earth, and that he (Joseph Smith) was to be called as a prophet of God and that through him the Church of Jesus Christ was to be restored to the Earth again. To know as I do that this is true pray and ask God and like Joseph Smith you will get an answer to your prayers. Show more Show less
