Hi I'm Devin

I'm an educator. I'm a musician. I'm a husband and father. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Chicago and Southern California. . . two very diverse cultures. I'm half Japanese and European descent and have always felt a great connection with my heritage on both sides. My mother's side has been members of the LDS Church for generations; however, my father was not a member of the Church while I was growing up. It wasn't until 2008, at the age of 65, that he embraced the Restored Gospel. I have a thirst for knowledge and love education. I guess that is why I became an educator myself. I have a PhD in Teacher Education, and am fascinated by the art and science of teaching and learning. I love music and have worked as a professional performer and vocal instructor. Music moves me. I love the outdoors. In my mind, there isn't a better day than one out on the water fishing . . . with my family! Which brings up my greatest love: my family. I absolutely enjoy being a husband and father. My family has become my greatest "past-time." We have four fantastic kids. Fantastic doesn't mean that it's always easy to get things right, but we work at it each day, and find joy in the journey.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in a family with my mother being an active member of the Mormon faith, and my father not practicing religion. This left me to decide what path I would follow. I can honestly say that from a fairly early age, I felt spiritual stirrings. I knew there was a God and that He had a purpose for me and my life. As a teenager, I decided to find out for myself. I spent time studying and praying. The answers didn't come all at once, but they did come and over time I found what I was searching for. The truths that I believe in continue to guide me today as a husband and father. They create a cornerstone for our family relationships and help my wife and me make critical decisions. The teachings of the Church and my testimony of Jesus Christ continue to support me through difficult times as well as find great joy and fulfillment daily..

How I live my faith

One of the great and exciting things I love to do is teach the youth. I have worked as an educator and public/motivational speaker for youth for the past two decades. In 2008, I had the great opportunity of seeing my father join the Church. His personal conversion was a long process. He attributes some of his conversion to watching my family and our commitment to living the teachings of Jesus Christ.

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Devin
As a Mormon, I believe that God teaches truth about Himself and His plan for each of us. These guiding truths are revealed to prophets, anciently and in modern times. Those teachings are recorded in what now constitutes our canon of scripture: The Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other books of scripture. The greatest blessings I receive from studying these scriptures daily, is the constant reminder of my relationship to God and His great desires for me. I am reminded each day of how I can improve and draw nearer to Him. I am also reminded each day of the great blessings extended to me by a loving Father in Heaven. Foremost of those blessings is His Son, the Savior of all mankind. These daily reminders offer me hope, healing and happiness. Show more Show less
