Hi I'm Brent

I'm a pretty regular guy and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I live in Calgary, Alberta with my wife Jen, our 2 little girls, Carmen and Macy, and our dog, Tawny. I am a software developer and I have been running my own business for about 2 years now. I love music, playing guitar, and sports of every kind. I probably watch as much Sports Center as anyone. I play hockey on a team here in Calgary, we are getting a little better every game.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a family with a deep tradition in the Church, and while that certainly helped shape who I am, I am not a Mormon for that reason alone. The Church has provided a foundation for my life and my family. It gives me true joy that is fleeting elsewhere. Without the teachings, principles and support I have received through the Church, I really don't know what my life would be like. I have come to know who I am and who I can become. Being a Mormon gives me a perspective on life that can't be found elsewhere. I feel like there is no challenge I cannot meet and no hardship I cannot overcome. I know that the teachings and experiences one receives through the Church would be valuable to anyone, come and see for yourself.

How I live my faith

I serve in the Bishopric in my ward as the 2nd Councillor. I love working with our Bishop and serving the members of our ward. I served a mission in South Africa when I was 19, I often look at that 2 year experience as a real milestone in my life. It was a joy to be among the people there, immersing myself in their culture and having the opportunity to share the Gospel with them, and experiencing the changes people went through as they came to be baptized. I made life-long friends through that experience.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is an ancient record of the people of the American Continent. It contains the teachings of prophets the same way the Bible contains teachings of prophets. The Book of Mormon harmonizes with the Bible and provides a second witness to the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His role as Saviour and Redeemer of the world. The Book of Mormon teaches many valuable principles that would certainly strengthen us individually, as families, as communities and as nations. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

My experiences with the many beautiful things of life have allowed the Holy Spirit to testify to my spirit that there is a God. Experiences such as a beautiful sunrise or a beautiful landscape, seeing the birth of my children, experiencing the love of family and friends have strengthened my faith in God. Scientific discovery has certainly shown us many beautiful truths about the universe, how vast space is and how improbable our existence is, and while science strives to prove or disprove the existence of God, for me, the witness of the Holy Ghost is more powerful than anything that can be written or discovered. That experience leaves a permanent mark on you. Show more Show less

What is Mormonism? OR What do Mormons believe?

At the heart of Mormonsim is Jesus Christ. The sacrifice that He performed for us is the paramount event in the life of each member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through Jesus Christ, each of us have the opportunity for true joy and happiness in this life, as well as in the life to come. Every doctrine, teaching and principle in the church is rooted in this central doctrine of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Simply, no, we don't. We worship God, The Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. While Joseph Smith is an important figure in our history, and we do talk of him often and the great things he did to establish the Church, we do not pray to him or worship him in any manner. Show more Show less
