Hi I'm Marla

I'm a Mormon. I am a mother of 5 children and grandmother.

About Me

I am a mother of four sons and one daughter. My life is hectic and busy at times. I have three Grandchildren and they are a blessing to me. I look forward to being with my family. I also enjoy quiet time. I graduated from College in 1981 and have been an at home mother. It has been a challenge at time for me to stay home and be a mom but it has been a great reward over all. I am active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. I am serving as our Scout Committee Chairman for the Troop, Team and Crew and an adviser for Cub Scouting in our area. My husband and I are now seeing our children leave "the nest". It is both exciting for them and quieter for us. I have more time for gardening, fitness activities and sewing. I exercise 5-6 days a week with water aerobics and walking. Because I live in the South we can garden almost all year long. It is GREAT!

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised a Mormon in a small town in Idaho but now I find myself raising our family in a big city. Each day I am thankful that I have the Gospel of Jesus Christ to anchor my day to day actions in honesty and truth. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ has helped me raise my children to be honest upright citizens that are contributing to their communities and neighborhoods. Because of Church I know what my children need to learn about God. I know that Heavenly Father is my Father and He hears and answers my prayers. I know that Jesus Christ died for my sins so that I may live again with Heavenly Father and with my family. I know that we can be a forever family. I know that Joseph Smith talked to God the Father and to Jesus Christ. I have learned these things are true because of personal revelation. I asked God and He has heard my prayers. When I am sad or lonely I turn to Heavenly Father in prayer for comfort and peace. Heavenly Father hear every prayer and answers every prayer, our hearts have to be open to the answer. I know that life is not easy for anyone but everyone’s life can have joy and peace.

How I live my faith

Each day I read and study scriptures and say a prayer before my family gets up. This brings me peace to start the day. I attend church each Sunday with my family by my side. I have more joy and peace in my life when I serve others. I look for ways to help those all around me. I not only serve my children and grandchildren I serve by visiting friends and neighbors each month. I volunteer in my daughters’ middle school band by washing and mending uniforms. This is something I do because God has given me a talent to mend and sew. My husband and I have always worked in the Scouting Program. All 4 of our sons are Eagle Scouts. Even though they are no longer in our Troop we still serve in that Troop. It is very rewarding to see Young Men learn as they go through Scouting.

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

My daughter was our last child. When she was old enough to start talking we would look at catalogs and magazines and I would point out what was modest and what wasn’t. Why was I doing this? I also taught her that her body was special that it was a gift from God. Any gift from God was important and we treat it with care and respect. When we dress our body we wear clothing that respects our body. Things that are see through, too tight, too short. etc. don’t take care of the gift our body is. My mother always said “if you feel good you look good and if you look good you feel good” I dress so that I look as good as I can without drawing attention to any one part of my body. I know that when I dress modest I feel respect for myself. I am taking care of the body God has given me. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

The things that make my lifestyle different from most are small. Like I do not try to fill my day with just anything, I try to fill my day with learning and things that uplift. This is what I do every day. Get up say prayers, read and study scriptures, get children up for school, fix breakfast and make lunches. After every one has left for school and work I look at my calendar to see what needs to be done today and tomorrow. There is washing to do and cleaning just like most mothers do but in the between times of my day I may call a friend that is having a hard time. I listen to inspiring music and words from our Prophet. I exercise each day with a walk or Wii workout. I may have to take someone to the doctor or study to give a lesson on Sunday. My life is not much different from yours except for the little things-- prayer, read good books, watch good movies and entertainment. These are little things that have big rewards. One night a week my children go to Youth night at church I may have to drive them. There is a constant striving to learn and be better that comes with the gift of the Spirit. Show more Show less
