Hi I'm Michael

I am a Physicist and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am a doctoral student at a local university pursuing my Ph.D. in physics. My research focuses on microscopy. Outside of the lab environment I enjoy teaching. I have found that even introductory materials provides a rich source for discovery. My favorite topics are classical mechanics and geometric optics. I have many interests outside of work. My main hobby is Karate. I love to play music and also draw and paint when time permits. My favorite outdoor activity is hiking, especially when I get to go fly fishing. I have a great family. I love doing things with my wife and cooking for her. I have a young daughter. Being her father and teaching her is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. Being a father is a constant lesson in many things.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Mormon family, and for a while my parents' faith was enough for me. After a while I felt the need to find my own assurance of the Mormon faith. I studied and prayed. I focused on reading The Book of Mormon. It took a while but eventually I had my faith confirmed by spiritual impressions from the Holy Ghost. My faith has waxed and waned but overall maintained a path which has led me closer to God and Christ and repeatedly confirmed my belief in the Mormon Church and The Book of Mormon.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith by not separating my Sunday behavior and study from the rest of the week. If a friend or colleague asks me how my weekend was, I'll let them know how my Saturday activities with my family went and also how Sunday was too. I feel that central to living my faith is the concept of discipleship. Through discipline and obedience to the tenants of Christ's Gospel I may grow closer to Him and my Father in Heaven. I believe that service is vital for developing a healthy relationship with God, Christ and your fellowmen. I have served in a variety of callings or positions at church. Some have been mundane, like record keeping. Others are immediately enjoyable, like teaching etc. Additionally I enjoy teaching and helping others in the community, where my abilities allow.
