Hi I'm Melinda Orton

I love being with my family. I enjoy hiking, reading, scrap-booking, music making, and learning. I live in Idaho. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a wife to the most wonderful man in the world and a mother of a precious little girl. Currently I am a full time mom and homemaker, and I could't be happier about that. My husband and I were finishing up our last semesters of college when we started dating and we were married after we graduated. Some things I have done in the last few years that I have always wanted to do are learning how to tap dance, ice skate, learn to play harp, and guitar. One of the best things I've been able to do was to live in Germany as a missionary for over a year. It was a terrific experience to learn their language and their culture, and do whatever I could to help them feel of Heavenly Father's love for them, and His desire to help them make their dreams come true. Each new experience brings me joy and growth as I rely on my Heavenly Father and the teachings of His Son Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents are both members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and always took our family to church. They also taught us during the week about the scriptures and how to become more like Christ. One thing they always emphasized was the need for us to find out for ourselves if what we were learning from them, church and the scriptures were really true. We were specifically taught that we could always pray and ask God questions we had to find out truths about doctrine and life. The first memory I have of knowing that God was there and cared about me was when I was ten. I was in bed one night and felt scared and all alone in the dark. Remembering what my parents had said about praying to God and Him helping us led me to get out of bed to kneel and pray to ask God to help me not be afraid. Once I started praying I had the desire to know if God actually existed, and so I asked Him if He was there. A moment later I felt a feeling to a degree I had never experienced before. I felt arms of love totally wrapped around me. No one was there, I was still alone, yet I felt I was encompassed about in love and security. I knew then that God existed, that He knew me and my desires, and that He loved me deeply. Since then every time I have wanted to know something or felt the need for guidance in my life I have followed the same pattern of prayer, and God has led me to the answer. Through prayer I know the Book of Mormon is true and that Christ restored His church to the earth.

How I live my faith

My faith in Jesus Christ is something that pulls me through the hard times. I live it by keeping the commandments in the Bible and other holy Scriptures. Things that I do on a regular basis are praying morning and evening for things that I am grateful for and things that I need help with, reading the scriptures (Bible and Book of Mormon), and trying to live as a disciple of Christ like being honest, helpful, and kind.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Melinda Orton
Missionaries proselyte because they want others to find the joy that they have found in knowing and living the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I have heard it explained in an example using fruit juice. If I try some fruit juice that I really like and enjoy, my first instinct is to have others try it in hopes that they will find it equally enjoyable. That is truly why we share our beliefs with others. It has brought us something we need and are grateful for, therefore it is simply inside us to want to share it. Show more Show less

How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

Melinda Orton
The Book of Mormon is different from the Bible in that it was written by prophets in ancient America from 600 BC to 420 AD. Though written in a different continent, these prophets also knew of Christ's divinity and prophesied of his coming, and taught his commandments. The Book of Mormon does not take away from the Bible, it only adds validity to it and adds another witness that Jesus is the Christ our literal Savior and Redeemer. It was written for our day. Joseph Smith received the "golden plates" from Angel Moroni in 1827. Moroni was the last prophet to write in the Book of Mormon (which was an engraved record on golden plates) and hid them in a hillside until the Lord saw fit to bring them out. When the time was right, Angel Moroni showed the plates to Joseph Smith who was called by God and Jesus Christ to restore the Church of Jesus Christ, and through the power of God translated them into English. The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, was published in New York in 1830. Since then it has blessed millions of people because of the truth taught therein about Jesus Christ, and Gods plan for us. Anyone can read it and know of its truthfulness. Anyone can pray to God, our Heavenly Father, and ask if it is true and comes from him. It has blessed my life in thousands of ways, I know it is true. Show more Show less
