Hi I'm Joann

Im a Filipino, a mom of beautiful kids, a wife, a vaccine scientist, Im a Mormon

About Me

I was born and raised in the Philippines. I served my mission in Salt Lake City Temple Square and New York City. I first met my wonderful husband during our stake youth conference in the Philippines. He waited for me for 7 years before getting married in Manila temple. We moved to Provo, Utah few weeks after getting married while we continue education, juggle work and start our family. We have two beautiful children. We currently live in Boston, MA as I do my postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School in neonatal immunology and vaccinology.

Why I am a Mormon

Faith and family makes me who I am today. Growing up in very predominant Catholic country, I always wondered how my parents converted. It was in the early 1970's when my mom was introduced to the Book of Mormon. She loves reading pocket books and a co-worker introduced her the book that will change her life, the Book of Mormon. It made her go on a mission and became one of the early sister missionaries in the Philippines. My dad on the other hand was a long-time investigator of the church. He wanted to know if it is true and has tons of questions about the gospel. He eventually joined the church and met my mom during the institute class she was teaching. They got married in the church and waited to get sealed when the temple was constructed in 1984. I have seen numerous blessings in my life because of how they brought us up in the gospel and from the truths we have learned from church. Those small and simple truths have all been restored here on earth through a living prophet. God is our loving Heavenly Father and He knows each and everyone of us. He knows the desires of our hearts. In my work as a scientist, I have a personal testimony on how special we have been carefully thought and designed. Each cell of our body has their own features. Each of the systems have specialized purposes that allow our body to harmoniously function as a whole. Similarly, we have the purpose to learn more about God, to serve others and to be like Him. Family is central to His plan and we can be with our families together forever even after this life through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

Boston is a beautiful city full of history and diversity. We are pretty new to the city and still don't know a lot of people. My husband and I were both called to serve as ward missionaries. It is great to be friends to new people in our congregation and assist them in learning more about the church. Similar to the "I was a stranger" initiative, we were strangers to the city and moving was really a challenge. We want to help new and those who wanted to learn more feel that they are welcome. We wanted to make them feel that we can all be partakers of the great blessings Heavenly Father has promised us.
