Hi I'm Elder Jon MacKillop

I'm a Texan, I'm a Missionary, I love God, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Texas and I am the youngest of 6 children. I love being out doors and camping is one of my favorite activties. I am currently serving a mission for the Lord and Loving every second of it! I grew up in a small town in Texas of about 600 people and worked on a ranch for about a year. I thought for awhile about joining the Military but when it came decision time it just didn't feel right to me so after a lot of soul searching I decided to serve a mission instead... I have never regretted it.

Why I am a Mormon

For a long time I had no idea what to do with my life and had no direction or life goals... mostly I just floated from party-to-party, I knew I wasn't going anywhere. When I turned 19 I moved out of my parents house and was living in a bad situation, I had basically become the prodigal son. I had thought about joining the military because I had no money and no way to progress in life, but when it came decision time it just didn't feel right. I had a lot of soul searching to do, I knew i needed God in my life. I started to read the Book of Mormon and when I had read it all the way through I went behind my parents house to the little creek that is there. I prayed to God to know if the Book was truly sent from him. I didn't have any feeling right away, so I began to doubt. I said "Father in heaven I need to know if it is true, I'm about to devote my whole life to this work and I Need to know." just as I finished the words a feeling came over me that I cannot deny. I felt like my spirit had just been picked up and placed on a foundation, one that could not be moved or destroyed. I also knew that the Book of Mormon was true and that it was from God, I could not deny it. I still know it is true for a fact and I know that Christ is my savior, he is the one that has saved me from the huge hole I was in. I Love my savior, and I love doing his work. This church is his church.

How I live my faith

I live my faith every day and I'm not afraid of who knows it, it has brought me the most happiness I have ever had. I love sharing it and standing out for it. Many people think the being a "Mormon" means that you have to change who you are and become a totally different person all-together, this is not true. I love to hang out with my friends and laugh all the time, I think if you don't laugh at least once a day then your life is really boring. I'm currently serving a mission for the Lord in Minnesota, it was NOT something that I was forced to do. A mission is something that I chose to do because I know that is what the Lord wanted me to do. He has done everything for me and I guess in some small way this is how I'm trying to give something back to him, and I know that he reconizes that.

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

Elder Jon MacKillop
We don't have paid clergy because that is not what God wants in HIS church. Peter and Paul in the Bible never got paid for what they did, Christ himself never asked for money in return for what he taught people....are we better than him? In the book of Micah in the Old Testiment he speaks of priests and prophets who teach for money. He says they bring a curse on the people. The fact of the matter is that this is God's church on the earth and it is run by people who love him and love each other. True that the people aren't perfect and they have faults, like we all do, but we aren't in this for money. We do however pay tithing (one tenth of our income) to the church but that is soley for maintaining the buildings and tithing produces the money that is needed to keep the church running. Tithing does NOT go to our Bishops or any other branch of clergy who oversee the church. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

Elder Jon MacKillop
Look at the creations in the earth and the sequence of the seasons. Look at the Planets in the Solar system and the rotation of the planets. Look at the numberless galaxys in space and the orginization of them. Everything points to the fact that there is a God. We have the Scriptures, why would hundreds of thousands of men and women testify that they know that God exists when they have nothing to benifit from it? If God didn't exist why would mankind from the beggining earthly history have some form of a belief in a god? The first person on earth knew who God was and is, he had a very intimate relationship with him because God Created this person and God called him his son. Why? Why would God call this person his son? Do we not call our children sons or daughters? God walked and talked with this created man, taught him and eventually gave him a wife. God only asked him not to do one thing, and when this man disobeyed what God asked him not to do this man was removed from being with God all the time. Eventually this Man had children of his own, he taught his children who God was and is. They taught their children, and they taught theirs. Every religious faith stems from one man who knew who God was and is, though their are different ideas and beliefs about God, it all came from one man who was created in God's image and was his son. There is a God in heaven, I know it, I have talked to him and you can to. He is the ultimate creator of the Galaxys and our own little planet. He is the Father of your spirit and he wants you to talk to him. Think about it, the Grand Creator, who holds all knowledge, wants to talk on a personal basis with you. He wants to help you through college, with your career and your family life. He has a plan for your happiness and wants you to succeed in your life, he is everything a loving Father should be. Talk to him through prayer. Maybe start by asking if he is there. I know you will recieve an answer from him, even if you don't think that you will. Show more Show less
