Hi I'm Shannon

I'm a mom. I love to learn. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I graduated from college in Cultural Anthropology. Even though I stay at home with my 5 kids right now, I have always stayed connected with the academic dialogue. My interests are: anthropological theories of religion, rites of passage/initiation, early modern English history, early Christian society, the advent of religious clergy and Mormon history. BUT the better part of my days consist of fixing snacks, washing clothes and taking care of my kids.

Why I am a Mormon

The most obvious answer is that I was raised in the church, but that doesn't really capture the truth of my story. I am a devout, practicing Mormon because I have had personal experiences with God. I have felt His forgiving and enabling power as I struggled to repent. After seeking His will for me through prayer, I have come to know His guidance and counsel as I contemplated life changing decisions. I frequently experience the Holy Ghost as He witnesses of the truth of gospel principles and teachings.

How I live my faith

Every Sunday, I teach songs to children ages 3-11. We learn songs about Jesus, Heavenly Father, families, and other gospel topics. My favorite that we've learned this year is called "He Sent His Son". The Spirit always bears witness of our Savior when I think about the words to this song and the music is beautiful too. Here are the lyrics: How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness? He sent His Son a newborn babe with peace and holiness. How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go? He sent His Son to walk with men on earth that we may know. How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death? He sent His Son to die for us and rise with living breath. What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say? Have faith, have hope, live like His Son, help others on their way. What does He ask? Live like His Son!

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

In the New Testament, Peter --Matthew 16:15-16, Acts 4:8-12, 1Peter 1:3-9--, John --The Gospel of John, 1 John 1:1-4, Revelation 1:4-6-- and Paul --Acts 22:3-16, Romans 1:1-6-- all bore their witness of what they personally knew and had experienced of Christ. This witness is what we call a testimony. When a Mormon "bears their testimony" they state the truths they have come to know of Jesus Christ, our Heavenly Father and other gospel principles through the power of the Holy Ghost.
