Hi I'm Jackie!

I devour as many plays and movies as I do multi-national foods. Bi-racial, a theatre major, a technophile--I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm addicted to Classics across all the forms of art. Shakespeare in particular is a huge passion of mine, alongside Greco-Roman art and movies from Hollywood's Golden Age. I also love modern and post-modern quirkiness, especially in children's literature. To round things out, I simply cannot get enough of foreign art--it's hard not to love the different perspectives the nations of the world give to life. Jazz is one of my favorite music genres. On the flipside, I'm into computers, video games and technology in general. People tend to be surprised at that, especially considering my aforementioned tastes, but you'll easily find me fixing up computers from friends and neighbors. I'm one of five children from a half-Mexican home. My parents spoke Spanish as much as English growing up, and I love hamburgers as much as chimichangas. This background was kind of the gateway for my insatiable appetite for learning about other cultures--especially through their cuisine. I want to travel the world, and have only just begun to scratch that surface. The violin's been my instrument of choice for nearly 11 years, while I dabble "amateurishly" in piano. I also draw and write as hobbies, while attempting to learn how to knit. I love to cook as much as I love to eat, especially when it involves learning something absolutely new.

Why I am a Mormon

Just as my parents came from different countries, their religious experiences were different. My dad's side family has been Mormons since the early days of the Church--when Joseph Smith lived in Nauvoo in the 1800's. My mom converted to "Mormonism" with her mother and siblings in Mexico, when she was in her early teens. They set the example and let me choose to follow. I'm a Mormon because of what I know. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that He lives. And more than anything else, I know that His Atonement can heal us and help us flourish and human beings. I'm also grateful for the opportunity to participate in making the world a better place, and for the knowledge that families are eternal.

How I live my faith

First of all, there are the standard answers of almost any Christian faith pray, read the scriptures, go to church etc. I try to take care of my body by eating and living healthfully, and avoiding unnecessary alterations to it like tattoos and excessive piercings. Giving back to the community is a huge deal in our Church, and I try to accomplish this in as many ways as possible. It may be through community service, donations to humanitarian aid or just being a friend. My love of art also stems from this to a great deal as well. It's not anywhere near enough to just take care of the physical needs of people--we've got to nourish the mind and spirit as well!
