Hi I'm Erin

I'm a linguist and an ESL teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a BA in linguistics with minors in Business Management and TESOL. I also have an MA in TESOL. Basically, I love learning about different cultures and the diversity of the world. I want to use my skills and love for people, to help them reach their own personal goals by teaching English. On the side I coach high school women's lacrosse, umpire high school and college lacrosse, run half marathons and try new recipes. I love trying new things and especially meeting people from different places, especially since I've lived all over. I currently teach English at a private University and consider education and learning an important part of my life.

Why I am a Mormon

Both of my parents decided in their late teens/early adult life to become active members of the church. Because of their decision I was raised Mormon all of my life. However, because my extended family on both sides aren't Mormon I have had lots of opportunities to be exposed to other religions and life styles and examine my own beliefs. In short my answer is that I choose to be a part of this religion because it makes me happy, I feel a personal relationship with God through its teachings and I seen spiritual proof of it, in my own life and in the lives of others. I have many friends of other Christian faiths that I respect and admire for living their beliefs, but as I've considered other doctrines, nothing makes more sense to me or feels more correct than the teachings of the LDS church.

How I live my faith

For me religion isn't a list of items on a check-list you do because you have to. It's a way of life because of the way it makes you feel, and the happiness it brings in a very real way. I love being Mormon because everyone has a chance to be involved on a regular basis and put your beliefs into practice. I currently am in charge of all of the music for my congregation. On a more informal level I make a conscious effort to not speak badly of others, to try to give others the benefit of the doubt before judging and see the potential in others, what they have to offer the world. I do those things because I want to follow Jesus Christ and they bring happiness to my life more than just going to church.

What is the priesthood?

Erin
To understand the priesthood you need to know a few things first. 1. God loves us and wants to be with us. 2. We are on earth to learn to be like him and to return to him. 3. God cannot physically be with us on earth. Therefore because God cannot be with us he authorizes prophets to act in his behalf for our benefit. Because prophets are just men, God gives them his authority, and the his power to act in his name. The priesthood is God's power to act in his name. Prophets then use the priesthood to teach us how to return to God and how to be spiritually close to him, since we cannot be physically with him. Prophets then give that priesthood to other worthy men who locally administer to God's children (prophets can't be everywhere either). The priesthood is then used by those worthy men to bless us through baptism and confirmation, and other ordinances. The priesthood is also used for blessings of healing, and comfort to bless God's children and to organize God's church. All of those things help us return to live with God again, remember him and feel his love, which is why he gives us the priesthood. This is the same power God gave to Moses, Aaron and Peter, only it was lost and is on the earth again today. Show more Show less
