Hi I'm Ryan

I'm an electroacoustic engineer who runs and plays hockey. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I work as an engineer for a hearing aid company and graduated college with a masters degree in physics. I like photography, hiking, running and pretty much anything that gets me outside. After college, I moved to Minnesota and learned to play hockey. I enjoy learning and doing new things, especially when I can use those things to help other people.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the church, but that isn't why I'm a Mormon. When I was 14 many of my friends were doing things that were contrary to what Mormons do. I had to make a decision, was I going to follow what my parents were teaching me or do what my friends did? I decided I was going to figure out if the The Book of Mormon is true or not. I read The Book of Mormon, and prayed about it, testing a promise found in it's closing pages. I believe that my prayers were answered that The Book of Mormon is true, and the teachings of the church that uses it are the way that God want's us to live. Since than I have done my best to follow the Savior and his teachings, and that has made my life the best it could possibly be.

How I live my faith

The Savior taught that we should love one another. I try to find ways to serve and help others. Often doing little things, like just letting someone talk about a difficult time they are going through or share some fun thing in their lives is enough to make someones day a little better. Sometimes we get opportunities to do bigger things to help out, like helping someone move. These opportunities not only allow us to show love to one another, they give us a chance to learn to really love one another.

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture, like the Bible. It teaches the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is different from the Bible in that the Book of Mormon was written by prophets who lived in the Americas during ancient times. Together, the Book of Mormon and the Bible serve as a pair of witnesses of what the Lord taught. Show more Show less

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

Without paid clergy, we all have an opportunity to come to understand the gospel in a very personal way. Since we all take part doing the work that a paid clergy would do, we have extra motivation to understand the gospel of Jesus Christ and learn his teachings. When we have the opportunity to teach in sunday school or speak in our other meetings, the preparation often gives us new insights into the gospel we wouldn't otherwise find. I've even noticed that when I try to teach something to a sunday school class, the students often teach me with there comments. This way we all benefit from the faith and gospel knowledge that each of us have developed in our own lives. Show more Show less

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Mormon church services are a group of three meetings about an hour long each. In the first meeting, the whole congregation gathers together to participate in the sacrament a little like communion and to listen to a few members of the congregation give short sermons on a gospel topic. After this meeting the congregation separates to sunday school classes for a discussion about a scriptural topic. For the third hour, the congregation separates into meetings for women and men. These meetings are much like the sunday school class, but the topics are often presented in a manner geared specifically to the needs of the members in that specific congregation. What does Mormonism teach regarding baptism?

Baptism is something that every one must do to follow the example made by Christ. Just as the Savior did, we must be baptized by someone who holds the authority, or priesthood of God. When we are baptized, we promise to God that we will follow his commandments and he promises that if we do that we can have our sins taken from us through the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

The word of wisdom are instructions on how to live a life that is healthy both physically and spiritually. It first warns us against things like tobacco, alcohol and other addictive substances. It also reminds that we should eat grains, fruits and vegetables and that we should eat meat in moderation. Basically, it tells us to take care of our bodies. The Word of Wisdom also contains a promise that if we do what it teaches we will be stronger and healthier than if we don't. I've found that promise holds true, if I take care of my body, I feel better and I feel like I can do more. Show more Show less
