Hi I'm Matt

I am a triathlete. I am a lawyer in the US Air Force. I have been married for 16 years and have 5 children. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have lived all over the world, but call Anchorage, Alaska, home. I love sports and outdoors activities, especially swimming, cycling and running (in that order). I am a military lawyer and veteran. I grew up as a Mormon and served a full time mission in Romania.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born a Mormon, but I am a Mormon because I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. Before I ever knew The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was Jesus' church, I knew that he lived and loved me. When I was 14, I went on a multi-day camping trip with several other Boy Scout youth. One evening, under a starry sky and a short walk away from our camp, our leaders invited those who desired to share their feelings about God and Jesus Christ. I listed to a few of my friends offer their feelings, and one of them was so overcome with emotion as he spoke of his Savior, Jesus Christ, that he cried. I wanted to know what he knew, to feel what he felt. I prayed in my heart to God, asking Him "Are you there, and do you hear me?" I felt come into my being a warm feeling unlike any I had ever felt before. I felt words in my mind saying "I do live and I love you," and I felt love--so loved that I began to cry. Through this experience and others I know that Jesus Christ lives and is my Savior, and I want to follow Him. I have read The Book of Mormon, and it does testify of Him and teach his gospel. It is scripture, and complements and magnifies what we learn of Jesus Christ in the Bible. The Holy Ghost has also testified to me that Joseph Smith was called to be a prophet of God, and that as God's prophet he did restore God's church to the Earth, with priesthood authority and a more correct understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I'm trying to be a good disciple of Jesus Christ. I seek to fulfill my responsibilities to my family, do a good job at work, and make my neighbors' lives better by serving in the community. I make a special effort to follow up with the families of deployed military members in my area. My wife and I support Cub Scouting and hold weekly activities for the young Cub Scout boys in our congregation. I try to share the gospel with people I meet, because it makes me happy and maybe they will be happier too.

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

I know that God lives because he hears and answers my heartfelt prayers. I have received His guidance through prayer, many times. I have also been supported and strengthened by Him in moments of need, such as having an important memory brought back to my mind. I have felt His tender mercies given to me and my family over and over again--blessings of protection, recovery from sickness, wisdom when making life decisions, nudges to make good daily habits.
