Hi I'm Dane

I like alternative music, sports, and doing research. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm from Oregon and love writing songs on guitar, playing sports, watching movies, and hanging out with my wife. The highlight of every day is coming home for dinner and getting to play with my smiling little monkeys (kids). I love learning and teaching and am currently working on my PhD in Accounting.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm going to get nerdy on you now. I believe in what we in the social sciences call "bayesian updating." The basic idea behind it is that you conduct experiments and update your beliefs based on the evidence you acquire. The neat fact about bayesian updating is that it doesn't matter what beliefs you start out with, because as evidence builds up, it ends up dwarfing your prior beliefs. The reason I'm a Mormon is because I've tried living the principles the church teaches and as a result I've now had so many experiences, which I cannot logically attribute to anything other than God, that I find myself convinced that the church is true. Without those personal experiences I would not be convinced. Anyone can have these experiences, if they're willing to try out God's playbook and put it to the test.

How I live my faith

One of the greatest truths I've found in church is that we're here on earth to learn to become like our heavenly parents. Knowing that they've learned to overcome all their weaknesses inspires me to try my best everyday to become just a little bit better in all I do: to be more friendly, more patient, etc. So I don't see going to church and living the principles the church teaches as just "checking a box" to get points in heaven. They're God's training program to becoming the best person I can be. Part of that process includes regularly doing service. The calling I've been given at church provides me the opportunity to frequently talk with people and answer their questions about the church and its teachings. I go out with the full time missionaries once a week and often get to teach lessons at church.

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

The sheer size, order and complexity of the universe I find truly astounding. And when I look at my kids and see how brilliantly my wife's genes and mine have been combined to create these little amazing people, who came to us pre-packaged with their own unique personalities, I just can't attribute that to random chance.
