Hi I'm Gary

I grew up in Idaho. I lived overseas for nineteen years. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a husband, father and grandfather. My wife and I have been married for forty-five years and we have been blessed with five children and nineteen grandchildren. I am a retired chemical engineer. We lived overseas for almost nineteen years and enjoyed visiting many countries on our annual vacation to the Unites States. I have served as chairman of the local district of the Boy Scouts of America. I love to serve in an organization that helps to strengthen in boys and young men the fundamental values of duty to God and country, of personal integrity and of compassion for and service to others. I am learning to speak the Spanish language. I study the scriptures in Spanish, regularly memorize Spanish vocabulary and study the grammar. The greatest challenge is to speak Spanish with others on a regular basis. I love the challenge of learning and the personal growth that it brings. I love to read—especially from the scriptures. I enjoy raising a garden and find it pleasing to have a nice looking yard. I occasionally go fishing and golfing. Most of all, I love my family and find life’s greatest joy in being with and serving them. No activity outside the home is fully enjoyable unless I do it with one or more members of my family.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormon Church. However, at an early age I learned for myself from the Holy Spirit that it is the true church. Through studying the scriptures and applying their teachings to my daily life and through fervent prayer I have received a spiritual understanding that has strengthened and blessed my life. The more fully I live the gospel of Jesus Christ, the more fully I feel the happiness that God has designed for all of His children. The more I serve my family and others, the greater is my love and reverence for my Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. I am striving with all my heart to make Him the center of my life.

How I live my faith

There are a few regular practices taught in the Church that have helped me to be true to my faith. I have personal prayer at least every morning and night. In addition, we pray as a family twice daily. I spend a few minutes each day studying the scriptures by myself and with my wife. We attend Church services each week, where I am strengthened by other members. I teach a Sunday School class and serve one afternoon and one evening each week in one of the Church’s temples. These practices strengthen my faith and give me the determination and courage to do what is right even when it isn’t popular. These simple daily and weekly observances make it possible to draw upon the strength, the mercy, and the grace that the Savior provides to all who do their best to obey His commandments. I feel as Paul felt when he said, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philip. 4:13).

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Through the ages, God has made His will known to his children through His prophets. As the scriptures state, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7). Just as the people who lived in the time of Noah, Moses, Abraham and other prophets of the past needed the direction that they received from God, we need His direction today through a living prophet. In fact, perhaps we need that direction even more, because we live in a world that is drifting at an increasing rate away from the teachings of Jesus Christ. We live in the time foretold by Paul, “Men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof” (2 Timothy 3:2). Yes, I believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today. His name is Thomas S. Monson, and the revelation he has received and continues to receive from God has helped me to draw closer to the Savior. I’m grateful for our prophet and his exemplary life. Show more Show less

What is the Church’s position on abortion?

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, either encouraging or undergoing an abortion is a serious transgression requiring confession to a bishop or branch president and sincere repentance to be forgiven, except in cases where the pregnancy seriously threatens the life of the mother or is the result of rape or incest. Even in these instances, the individual(s) are encouraged to counsel with their bishop or branch president and fervently pray to be sure abortion is the appropriate step to take. Show more Show less
