Hi I'm María-Elena

I grew up in Chile and came to Canada more than twenty years ago.I'm an ESL and Spanish teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was an ESL teacher in my country and I came to Canada as a refugee. At the beginning It was hard to be away from my relatives and the people that I love.I wanted to work in my profession but I could not because I did not have a Canadian diploma. I became a single mom of a two year old daughter and a baby boy and for ten years I was dedicated to my children. During that time I decided to go to College and got a TESOL diploma (Teaching English to Students that speak Other Languages) . After that I went to university and got a Master's degree in Spanish literature. I love teaching languages and help people. I always have opportunities to serve and help newcommers. After ten years of being a single mom I found my eternal companion and got married to this wonderful man. I am very happy and very blessed as well.

Why I am a Mormon

The missionaries knocked at my grandmother's door when I was about four years old. Since then I have been in the church because my grandmother, my mom and my uncle got baptised in the church at that time. Later on I was baptised when I was ten together with my sister and my brother. When I was a teenager I attended Seminary religious studies and the teacher challenged us to ask God for a testimony of the church. I fervently prayed to our Heavenly Father to get a testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel. That answer came to me as a strong feeling of warmth and peace that made me cry. I knew in the bottom of my heart and without any doubt that this gospel was true. When I was 21 years old I decided to serve a mission for the church and was assigned to serve in Chile-Concepción Mission. I served for twenty months and it was the best time of my life. I enjoyed bringing people the message of the restored gospel and how the teachings of Jesus Christ can change our lives. I saw many people's lives changed for ever. That brought me so much joy and hapiness because I know this gospel is true. I know Jesus Christ lives and is the head of the restored church on the earth. His gospel brings hope to the people of the world.

How I live my faith

I love helping others and serving in the community. I live in a cooperative and I am the vice-president of the board of directors. I am also the president of the women's organization in our church and am always helping organizing activities to help enrich our lives. I live in a city where we have a constant flow of newcommers that need our help. With my husband and our children we help them getting what they need as much as we can. We like helping the community, our neighbors, church members and friends. Serving others is what makes us very happy.
