Hi I'm Mike

I play saxophone in the U.S. Army Band. I've created a few mobile phone apps. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a saxophonist in the United States Army Band and am grateful for the opportunity to serve my country in that capacity. I love jazz and have devoted much of my life to music practice, study, teaching and performance. Music has afforded me the opportunity to visit 5 continents, including a world tour on a cruise ship, of all things. I am married to the love of my life, and we are the parents of 5 children. I enjoy reading to my kids. I recently got into running. I have developed a few mobile apps on the side.

Why I am a Mormon

Hearing the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, as taught by the Mormon missionaries, can answer many of life's most important questions. It can bring a sense of joy, purpose, and fulfillment. But only if the message is true! My parents are both converts to the Mormon faith, and I was raised in a devout Mormon home. But merely being born into a Mormon family was obviously not sufficient evidence for me that the Mormon faith was true. I needed to gain my own witness, my own conviction somehow. As I read the following from the New Testament, I had the distinct impression that God was indeed my Heavenly Father and that I was His child. He knew my heart, He knew my sincere and earnest desire to know the truth, and my willingness to whole heartedly embrace whatever truth I should learn from Him. I was convinced that I could ask Him directly and that He would not lead me astray. He had both the power and desire to guide me as any loving parent would: Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Matthew 7:7-11 I had read the Book of Mormon several times at this point. I had been taught the gospel since my childhood. Now, I prayed to my Heavenly Father and asked Him if the Book of Mormon was true, and if Joseph Smith was a true prophet called of God. That prayer was answered in a clear and unmistakable way. I knew and comprehended it was true. I felt joy in my heart, and enlightenment in my mind. That witness has been reaffirmed countless times as I have devoted my life to His cause.

How I live my faith

For the last 5 years, I have had the privilege of serving as a bishop, or pastor of our congregation. It has been my privilege to work with the youth, to seek out and help the poor and needy, to visit the sick and elderly, and to serve in the community. I am trying to learn more about Jesus Christ and His gospel by study and prayer, and then I try to live the principles I learn. However, I am very much a work in progress!
