Hi I'm Amanda

I'm a middle school music teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college graduate. I taught for two years in the public school system in North Carolina as a middle school music teacher. It was the bomb. Middle schoolers rock. I lost my father to cancer about four years ago. After years of fertility treatments I have a precious son who I love more than life. Now I stay home and take care of him full time. Huge blessing. I am happily married to my best friend who supports me through all of life's ups and downs.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised as a member of the church but I continue to be be a Mormon for my own personal reasons. I am a Mormon because it makes me a better person. The church has taught me a lot about Jesus Christ and what it is to know him. I choose to be Mormon because the church helps me to regularly assess my life and become a more Christian person. The teachings of this church bring me closer to God the Father and Jesus Christ. Like many other young people I had a crisis of faith-- a period of time where I seriously considered leaving this church. Then I read a book that changed my life-- The Life of Pi. It is a story about a boy who chooses what story to live his life by. There is no proof for either story but they begin and end the same. That is how I view my own relationship with God. There is no proof He is or He isn't, but His is the story I choose to live my life by and this is the church I choose to do it it. That is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by attending church regularly. I live my faith by visiting those members of my church who I have been assigned to visit and make sure they are okay. I live my faith by regularly studying my scriptures and praying. I live my faith by dressing modestly and abstaining from alcohol, coffee, tea, and tobacco. I live my faith by being open about it and discussing it freely and frequently with friends and coworkers.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Mormons do not worship Joseph Smith. I have had kind Christian friends tell me they believe Mormons worship Joseph Smith more than Jesus Christ and God the Father and therefore are not Christians. Joseph Smith was a prophet, just like Abraham, Moses, or Isaiah. But the ancients in the Bible did not worship their prophets. They obeyed the words of the prophets because that is who God spoke to for the general welfare of his people. It is the same today. Joseph Smith and our current prophet spoke/speak for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and in their roles as prophets we respect and honor them, but we do not worship them. We worship Jesus Christ. Our lessons in church each Sunday focus on Jesus Christ and his Holy Scriptures, not Joseph Smith. We have lessons about our prophets every now and again, but the majority of our time is spent in the scriptures getting to know Jesus Christ and God the Father. It is they who we worship.
