Hi I'm Matt

I love my wife and 4 kids, acoustics, basketball, and waterskiing. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My wife and I have 3 little girls and recently welcomed a baby boy into our home. I have degrees in electrical engineering and acoustics and I work for a hearing aid company named Starkey Labs. I've learned how to write software for the iPhone as a hobby. I enjoy playing basketball, waterskiing, cooking, music, and playing with my kids. I served for 2 years as a full-time missionary in Suriname, where I fell in love with spicy food, travelers palm trees, hammocks, and the wonderful people.

Why I am a Mormon

I have found The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be exactly what it claims to be. It is the Church of Jesus Christ, restored and lead by a true and living prophet. I know that God lives. He is my creator and He has a plan for each of His children. I know, through the witness of the Holy Ghost and as an answer to prayer, that my sins have been and will be forgiven and I will be resurrected through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The same witness of the Holy Ghost has helped me to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is lead by a prophet and 12 apostles who are called of God and who teach us His will. Following the commandments of God and serving in His church have brought me more peace than any other endeavor in my life. As a member of this church, I feel like I'm doing what my Savior wants me to do and I feel confident raising a family in a world full of turmoil, wickedness, and confusion. Prayer, scripture study especially the Book of Mormon and service help us stay grounded in the principles that Jesus taught.

How I live my faith

I strive to live my faith privately and publicly. I spend time each day in prayer and studying the scriptures. I take time to ponder my relationship with God. I repent of my wrong doings and missed opportunities and seek help in overcoming my faults. I ask God for more faith, for help in trials, and for help to bless the lives of others. If I practice my faith privately then I am in a position to be lead by the Holy Spirit to serve publicly. I believe the most important service I can give will be to my wife and children in our home. I also volunteer time at church to visit people who have recently joined the congregation, help others with moving or home improvement projects, to teach lessons on gospel topics, to talk with those struggling with trials, and whatever else is needed. I have enjoyed bringing my children along to collect food for the hungry, and involving them in projects to earn extra money to give to the needy. We all need to overcome pride in this life. I strive to do what is right for the right reasons. I remember the Savior's counsel to "let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth" as well as the counsel to " let your light so shine before men".

What is the Church’s position on abortion?

Matt
Abortion is not generally condoned by the Church. In certain cases where pregnancy has resulted from rape or incest, an abortion might be condoned after the mother's prayerful consideration and counseling with her Bishop. An unwed mother or mother who is otherwise not fit to care for her child will receive the greatest comfort and blessings through unselfishly carrying the child and placing it up for adoption. What is the priesthood?

Matt
The priesthood is authority to act in the name of God. This authority is used for baptizing, conferring the gift of the Holy Ghost, blessing the sick, presiding over a congregation, and blessing the sacrament, among other things. The authority of the priesthood is given by the laying on of hands by those who have the priesthood and are commissioned to do so. The power of the priesthood is faith, righteous living, and service. Worthy men receive the priesthood when they arrive at an appropriate age and spiritual maturity. The priesthood can only be used in the service of others. It cannot be used for self-gratification or to control or take advantage of another person. Show more Show less

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Matt
Repentance and forgiveness are essential to any healthy relationship. Will power alone will never be sufficient to change us into the people that we want to become, and that others need us to become. Faith in Jesus Christ means that we believe we can be free from our sins and overcome our shortcomings through Christ's atonement. It means that we believe in His power to forgive. It means that we are humble enough to forgive others and cheer them on their way in life rather than standing to condemn them. Faith in Jesus Christ means that we will trust Him enough to let go of what justice would demand of another person. Faith in Jesus Christ means that we know He will heal us when we are hurt, and that revenge cannot make us feel better. Faith in Jesus Christ eliminates the competition in relationships and replaces it with unity.   Show more Show less
