Hi I'm Marcia

I grew up in a military home, travelled the world, I was a Marine, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have been a member since 1980, I love the church. I was not raised in a religious home. I was taught about Jesus in a general way and was shown where our Bible was in case I wanted to read it. No one else ever read it with me. I am a mom and a grandmother, life is complicated just like everyone elses. I drive my husband to work and pick him up, I sing on singsnap.com and I sew , crochet, knit, dance, swim, enjoy my husbands company, invite the missionaries to eat with us every week. I play on the computer, I am on facebook and do some twitter, I am connected to all of my family and my husbands family and church family on facebook and my Daughters of the American Revolution friends. I enjoy science fiction t.v. shows, my husband likes the news and the Dallas Cowboys and OU. and we like some movies. I watch Burn Notice, Army Wives, The Closer, my husband likes Law and Order mostly watches it when I am not home cause I don't care for it. I answer questions here and on Yahoo questions and answers. We have 2 cats, I have had a few hamsters but none right now

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because I felt empty on Sunday, and I did attend many other denominations in my search for a way to feel fulfilled on Sunday, when I found this church, I was filled and found home.

How I live my faith

I attend church every sunday, we have three meetings, the first is where everyone is present including children. We listen to people present topics from the scriptures they have researched at the request of the Bishop. usually there are two or three people, we sing an opening song, a song just before the Lords supper or communion which we take 48 weeks of 52 every year. the exceptions are general conference and other large conferences. the second meeting is sunday school we study out of the scriptures, the Old testment, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, we are in the Old Testament now in 2010 where I live, the third meeting is where men and women have separate meetings. We learn from the same books but men teach different that women do, so it works out. I also sing in Choir, I love singing so this is very fun, i also keep in touch with three other women in the church by mail to let them know what is happening and find out how they are doing. I do what ever I am asked to do, I have led the singing in the first meeting and in the womens meeting

How are the activities of the Mormon missionaries funded?

At least 2 or 3 ways that I know of 1. the missionary's family pays for their mission, 2. the missionary has worked since they were young and saved to go on a mission 3, we have a general missionary fund that any member can contribute to and I am sure there are criteria for a missionary to meet to be able to draw on that fund. And I have heard of times when a family was unable financially to pay but the young person wanted to go so various families in their congregation volunteered to contribute so the missionary could serve. What is Mormonism? OR What do Mormons believe?

To me those are two separate questions, what is the term Mormonism, it is what members were called by people in the 1840's that has carried over that was meant to be a mean thing to call a member. I believe in God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost a.k.a. the Holy Spirit. I believe in literal repentance for the remission or forgiveness of sin. If you did something bad say you are sorry and don't do it again. I believe in following the example of Jesus Christ, I don't always succeed. Show more Show less

What are Mormon women like? Do Mormons believe in equality of men and women?

I think Mormon women are as different from each other as other women are different from each other. I am not like most women, and I have heard stories about women in Utah, I am nothing like those stories. I do not have a perfect house, I do not have children in my home. Mormons believe in the equality of men and women but we also believe there are differences built in. Women are expected to be more nurturing. There are exceptions to every rule, the case of a single male parent, he would be nurturer by default. Some women are very athletic so to call them weaker would be inaccurate. Some men are not born leaders so they appreciate the help of their spouse to keep things running. We think of men and women as partners. If you want a farm analogy, we can be compared to a pair of oxen, pulling equally. sometimes one or the other must be in charge but mostly we pull together. Show more Show less

Why don’t women hold the priesthood in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? How do Mormon women lead in the Church?

Women don't hold the priesthood, men do, and women have the benefit of the power to act in God's name in their homes through their spouse or their sons. Women lead in Relief Society, there is a presidency in each congregation, and women lead Primary, childrens sunday school. And women lead the teen age sunday school classes of girls over age 12. The women report to the men but delegating the organization and teaching to the women helps because the men in charge cannot be everywhere at the same time. Show more Show less

What is a ward/stake/branch?

A ward is a single congregation, usually around 300 people, a Stake is many congregations, for example in one stake I lived in there were more that 5 congregations. A Branch is the begining of a Ward, I don't know the smallest number of people who can be called a Branch but I think you need at least 180 people to be a Ward, when the Ward gets larger than 300 we divide the Ward so there are two. Then they have room to grow and the more people come into the Ward the more we divide and we start to have A stake. Show more Show less

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

All Mormons are not required to serve a mission, the young men are encouraged to serve missions, but we also have women missionaries and they serve when they turn 21, and we also have older missionaries, those couples who have retired and would like to serve. No one is required. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons believe in the Bible?

The Bible is the word of God, revelation to the people in the Middle East, their history interacting with God is just as relevant to me as the History of the Book of Mormon People. There are lessons in all scripture. Be as patient in afliction as Job, be as wise as Solomon, be as faithful as Ruth, be more careful of your hormones than David was. Have as much faith as Jesus, he did miracles you know. Be teachable like Paul. Be compassionate like Jesus, when the woman with an issue of blood touched His clothing He knew it and simply said "thy faith has made thee whole". Show more Show less

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Some of the blessings we can receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost are stronger resistance to temptation, its easier to make right choices and easier to follow through, to leave a movie if it displays scenes you didn't want to see. To walk away when vulgar language begins in a conversation. The Gift of the Holy Ghost can also warn us of danger, there are books filled with stories of people who were saved from accidents and death by listening to the Holy Ghost and doing what the Holy Ghost said to do. Or stop doing. Show more Show less

What is the difference between attending a Mormon Church and a Mormon Temple?

Attending a Church building is something everyone can do. When attending a Church building we wear dresseswomen or suitsmen unless we are cleaning the building then we wear work clothes. Only Temple Recommend holding church members can go inside a Mormon Temple, Temples are not open on Sunday, only Tuesday through Saturday. The church building is open on Sunday where we meet for 3 hours and on Wed night for the instruction of the youth which are 18 and under. Most of the rest of the time the church building is not open. The exceptions are buildings that have Family History Centers, then the building is open during those posted hours for research and there are people there to help with that research. What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

I live the way other women live, but I avoid some of the vices others indulge in. my husband goes to work everyday, like other people and we pay our bills, and we buy food and clothes and do laundry. We spend time with our family, watch t.v. together. Go on trips together. Spend time with friends, at the lake or other preferences on Friday evening and Saturday. We go to church on Sunday, and on monday we go back to work and take care of our kids and our neighbors. We are friendly and do almost everything other people do. I don't do drugs and I don't hang around people who do drugs. We have friends at work like other people. I enjoy talking about science fiction because it is one of my interests. I listen to music, go dancing. We go to parties, give baby showers , give bridal showers, babysit for other people, some of us even do daycare for a living. When we have a lawn we mow it but not usually on Sunday, probably saturday. Show more Show less
