Hi I'm Jacob

I grew up in southern California. I love helping other people. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Right now I am serving a 2 year mission for the Mormon Church. I am serving in the Missouri St. Louis Mission. Our mission covers about a 3 hour radius outside of St. Louis. I am origionally from southern California. I played competitive volleyball in high school and I loved it. I really got close to the guys that were on my team. They were like brothers to me. I also used to work as a volunteer with the fire department. I love helping other people and working with kids. I also worked as a lifeguard and swim teacher at one of the local pools in my community. I believe in helping other even when I have no idea who they are. I am a student at a university and I am majoring in nursing with plans to put that towards a career in firefighting.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Mormon faith. As I look back on my upbringing I realize how much the Church and its values protected me and kept me from many of the bad things that others have had to deal with. Many questioned why I did not drink or smoke or why I chose to avoid things like pornography. However, I realize now how much grief I avoided by living my life in accordance with God's commandments and not following the ways of the world. I feel like everyone has a void in their life that they are trying to fill. Some people use productive things like hobbies, sports, music. Other times, people turn to destructive things like drugs, alcohol, sex, and other things that bring momentary pleasure but lasting unhappiness. But honestly, the only thing that has helped me fill that void is having enough faith in Jesus Christ to actually try to live what He taught. Being a member of the Church has helped me to feel completely happy and content. I know God loves me and knows me individually. This brings me this most happiness that i have ever felt.

How I live my faith

As a missionary I spend all of my time focusing on others. The term that we used is "getting lost in the work." It has been an amazing experience to have all of by basic needs met by the Lord so that I can focus myself on the service and progression of others. I and my missionary companion spend a lot of time finding and teaching people about what brings true and lasting happiness. We also take a few hours a week to volunteer at the local food pantry. I have met some of the nicest people during these nearly two years of service. When I was involved in the Boy Scouts of America, I oversaw a major service project at the elementary school that I attended in California. We laid cement paver stones in an area that was affected by severe rains and thus had flooded a nearby classroom.

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Jacob
A "testimony" is basically a personal statement of belief. Ever since i was little i have heard about people 'bearing their testimony' or 'gaining a testimony.' Basically it means that a person gains a spiritual knowledge of something. Either through prayer, study, or personal experience. I have a testimony of many different principles of the gospel. The most most important, I feel, is my knowledge of the Savior Jesus Christ. I have felt the Holy Spirit testify to my heart that Jesus Christ is really the son of God. And that He died for my sins and the sins of the world. I am very grateful for this testimony because i know that it is from God.  Show more Show less

What is the Church’s position on abortion?

Jacob
The Church is against abortion. The scriptures say that the worth of every soul is great in the sight of God. Mortality is one of the greatest gifts and experiences that God has given us. Thus the Church is against taking away that opportunity from any of God's children whether born or not. It is equally important to note that everyone makes mistakes. A person in the situation of opting for an abortion is obviously under a lot of personal stress. Thus to help those that are in need the church has family services that help those who are not in a situation to become a new parent. There are many couples that cannot have children on their own and need to adopt. For a person that is not in a situation to rear a child, putting that baby up for adoption is one of the better options. As for those who have chosen in the past to have an abortion. That is a transgression that can be repented of. The church has many ecclesiastical leaders like bishops, branch presidents, and mission presidents that can counsel those who have ever decided to take part in an abortion. The Lord loves all of his children and promises that He will help us to overcome our trials and our mistakes. Show more Show less
