Hi I'm Jason M. Brown

I'm a Mormon Worker

About Me

A California native, I am a BYU graduate and am currently getting two masters degrees in forestry and theology at Yale. I am the editor of a small newspaper called the Mormon Worker, which is devoted to meaningful discussion of Mormonism and radical politics.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up Mormon. After my tumultuous teenage years I decided to serve a mission. I served in the Dominican Republic. It was there that I was converted to the social teachings of the Book of Mormon, which is truly a text for our times. I believe deeply in the Sermon on the Mount, and strive to follow Christ's example of radical charity.

How I live my faith

While I do attend church, for me there is no place on earth that I feel more connected to the earth, God and the universe than in the forest.

Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

Jason M. Brown
Self-reliance has long been a value of Mormons. Self-reliance means personal, family and community inter-dependence. Since the rise of Mormonism in the 1830's, Mormons have been taught to emphasize cooperation over competition. Show more Show less
