Hi I'm Joe

I play the bassoon, cook Vietnamese food. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a musician, have always loved music. I'm mostly the nerdy classical type but also believe in supporting all types of local live music. I love Indian, Greek, Mexican, Brazilian, Chinese, and especially Việtnamese food. Never had it? Try some Phở. When I can spare the time, I like working on cars and bikes and generally tearing apart and rebuilding things. I read - lots of classics, but also whatever book catches my eye at a thrift shop. Did I mention I like thrift shops? Oh, and I like traveling. I've been to Australia, Vietnam and a lot of the US. Food and culture are great but the best thing about traveling is people.

Why I am a Mormon

Jesus Christ had the best ideas ever. He was the best person ever to live, and was the Son of God. I feel like I get closer to him, little bit by little bit, as I'm a member of this Church. I believe it is His church, and that He is in charge of it.

How I live my faith

My tools stay in my car so I can stop and help people having car trouble. I like to talk to strangers 'cause you never know if you everyone has a unique story. Sometimes I make new friends and often I learn something. Every week I help coordinate a gathering of single young people, just for an hour or so. We play games, do service and have short lessons. Most of the group, including me, live away from home and it's like a kind of surrogate family.

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

The Temples are all about "covenants" or commitments to God. Like other commitments it's important to know what you're getting into, and to be prepared before making them. Temples are holy places, covenants are holy commitments -- these take spiritual preparation. So, before going to the temple members can take "temple-prep" classes to learn about, and prepare for covenants made in the temple. Also, members are interviewed by local church leaders to help them determine if they are ready for that step. I love the Temple for the feeling I get there. The Church hopes everybody will want to come to the Temple and encourages everyone to prepare and go there. Show more Show less

What is faith?

Just like other words 'Faith' has several meanings and uses. My favorite definition, the one I think is the most useful, is this: Faith is the power to look beyond what is concrete and empirical to see what is possible and then to move toward it. It is "hope for a better world" and really hope that you can be a better self and acting on that. It is what the world can always use more of and is one of the great values of religion/spirituality.
